Tools of Steina and Woody Vasulka and their use in specific videos

Abstract:

Woody a Steina Vašulkovi stáli ve 20. století u zrodu nového druhu umění, videoartu. Jsou dokonce považováni za jeho průkopníky ve světovém kontextu. Cílem této bakalářské práce je popsat a zmapovat technologie, nástroje a postupy, které používali manželé Vašulkovi ve svých dílech. Kromě popisu samotných nástrojů je pozornost věnována také motivacím a okolnostem jejich vzniku a konkrétním způsobům jejich užití. Cílem je představit tvorbu Vašulkových především z hlediska využívaných nástrojů a jejich specifických vlastností. Práce obsahuje ilustrace jak nástrojů, tak také efektů, které mají v konkrétních dílech, tabulku s dílem Vašukových, kde je jasně vidět, jaké nástroje použili, a následnou vizualizaci dat z tabulky do několika přehledných grafu, který představují využití jednotlivých nástrojů v díle Vašulkových na časové ose.

Abstract:

Woody And Steina Vašulka were at the birth of a new kind of art, video art, in the 20th century. They are also pioneers of videoart in a global context. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to describe the technologies, tools and procedures that the Vašulkas used in their art. In addition to the description of the tools and their usage, the motivation and circumstances of their origins are also addressed. The goal is also to present the art creation of the Vašulkas, especially in terms of the tools used and its specific properties. This work contains illustrations of the tools and the effects that they have in specific artworks. The usage of the various tools used in the work of the Vašulkas over the past decades is also listed in tabular form and comprehensibely visualized at the end of this thesis.
