Associations of the mindfulness and Internet gaming disorder: Implications for the game design

Anotace:

Cieľom tejto práce bolo preskúmať vzťahy preferencie aspektov herného dizajnu s všímavosťou a IGD na vzorke slovenských hráčov World of Warcraft. Teoretická časť predstavuje základy herného dizajnu, koncept všímavosti a Internet gaming disorder (IGD), ako aj predchádzajúci výskum zameraný na asociácie týchto pojmov s herným dizajnom. Dizajn hry bol rozdelený do piatich podkategórií: Estetika, Interakcia, Príbeh, Rozhranie a Charakter. Údaje boli zozbierané prostredníctvom online dotazníka. Pozostával z demografického dotazníka, Internet Gaming Disorder Scale – Short-Form, Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) a série otázok súvisiacich s jednotlivými aspektami herného dizajnu. Výsledky potvrdili vzťah medzi všímavosťou a príbehom, IGD a interakciou a koreláciu charakteru a rozhrania s všímavosťou aj IGD. Na základe týchto zistení sú prezentované praktické odporúčania pre dizajnériv hier.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to explore the relations of the preference of game design aspects with mindfulness and IGD in a sample of Slovak World of Warcraft players. The theoretical part introduces the basics of game design, the concept of mindfulness and Internet gaming disorder (IGD), and previous research focused on the associations of these concepts to game design. The design of the game was divided into five subcategories: Aesthetics, Interaction, Story, Interface, and Character. The data were collected through an online questionnaire. It consisted of the demographic questionnaire, Internet Gaming Disorder Scale–Short-Form, Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), and a series of questions related to each aspect of game design. The results confirmed a relationship between mindfulness and Story, IGD and Interaction, and a correlation of Character and Interface with both mindfulness and IGD. Based on these findings, some practical implications for game design are presented.
