Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá románom Prebudenie od Kate Chopin a vyobrazuje koniec devätnásteho storočia v Amerike, z hľadiska sociologického i historického. Práca sa predovšetkým zaoberá postavením žien v spoločnosti. Teoretická časť práce vysvetľuje význam literárných a sociálnych fenoménov tzv. Ideál pravého ženstva, Kult domesticity a Nová žena, za cieľom nájsť odkazy na prezentované fakty v uvedenom literárnom diele. Pri skúmani hlavnej postavy, Edny, a jej postavení v spoločnosti, sa berie do úvahy detstvo Kate Chopin, jej kreolské zázemie a obzvlášť jej životný šýl. Analytická časť práce, kladie prednostný záujem na sebaobjavnie Edny a pojednáva o jej vzájomných vzťahoch s ostatnými postavami v románe. Záverom práce je zistenie, že i keď je Edna utlačovaná predpismi zavedenými kreolskou spoločnosťou, bojuje proti genderovým roliam ustanovenými druhou polovicou devätnásteho storočia a zažíva duchovného prebudenie. Edna sa stáva Novou ženou uväznenou v spoločnosti limitovanej patriarchálnymi obmedzeniami a ženským ideálom. Preto si Edna vyberie radšej nežiť vo svete, kde si ju ostatní cenia najprv ako matku a manželku, a až potom ako ľudskú osobu.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with Kate Chopin´s novel The Awakening, and portrays the historical and social background of the late-nineteenth century America. The thesis is particularly concerned with the women´s roles in the society. The first part of the thesis is theoretical and explains the importance of the literary and the social phenomena of so-called Angel in the House, Cult of Domesticity and the New Woman, in order to find literary reference to the facts presented. Kate Chopin´s childhood, her Creole background, and especially her lifestyle, are taken into consideration while examining Edna, the main character, and her position in the society. The second part of the thesis is analytical and is primarily concerned with Edna´s self-discovery and her interaction with other characters that are analysed and discussed. The thesis concludes that Edna although oppressed by the codes of the Creole society, fights the gender roles estimated in the late-nineteenth century America and undergoes spiritual self-awakening. She becomes the New Woman trapped in the society limited by patriarchal restriction and feminine ideal. Therefore, Edna makes a choice not to live in a world where she is valued first as a mother and wife and second as a human being.
