Relation of insomnia and depression

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vybranými souvislostmi deprese a insomnie. Jejím cílem je zmapovat výskyt a vzájemné souvislosti těchto jevů mezi mladými dospělými. Dalším cílem práce je současně prozkoumat, zda je únava mediátorem mezi insomnií a depresí. K výzkumu byly použity sebeposuzovací dotazníky Index závažnosti insomnie (ISI), Zungova sebeposuzovací škála deprese (SDS) a Škála závažnosti únavnosti (FSS). Celkem se výzkumu zúčastnilo 389 participantů ve věku 20 až 30 let. Průměrný věk participantů byl 22,43 let. Ve výzkumném souboru se vyskytovalo 78 (20,1 %) mužů a 311 (79,9 %) žen. Byl prokázán středně těsný statisticky významný vztah mezi insomnií a depresí. Výsledky naznačují, že čím závažnější symptomy deprese člověk pociťuje, tím závažnější jsou i symptomy insomnie a naopak. S insomnií nejvíce korelovaly somatické symptomy deprese a depresivní nálada. Ve výzkumném souboru nebyly nalezeny statisticky významné rozdíly mezi výskytem deprese a insomnie v závislosti na genderu. Ukázalo se, že únava je částečným mediátorem vztahu mezi insomnií a depresí.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis explores selected connections between depression and insomnia. It aims to map the prevalence and interrelationships of these phenomena among young adults. Another aim of the thesis is to simultaneously investigate whether fatigue is a mediator between insomnia and depression. Self-report questionnaires such as the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the Zung Depression Self-Report Scale (SDS), and the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) were used for the research. A total of 389 participants aged 20 to 30 were included in the research. The mean age of the participants was 22.43 years. There were 78 (20.1 %) males and 311 (79.9 %) females in the research sample A moderately close relationship between insomnia and depression has been demonstrated. The results suggest that the more severe the symptoms of depression a person experiences, the more severe the symptoms of insomnia and vice versa. Somatic symptoms of depression and depressed mood were most strongly correlated with insomnia. No statistically significant differences were found in the study sample between the prevalence of depression and insomnia depending on gender. Fatigue appeared to be a partial mediator of the relationship between insomnia and depression.
