The use of songs as an effective way of working with PARSNIP topics in English lessons

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá začleněním PARSNIP témat do hodin anglického jazyka, které se nevyskytují v učebnicích tohoto předmětu, a které jsou nesmírně důležité pro pochopení světových mezikulturních vztahů. Pro začlenění těchto témat do hodin anglického jazyka posloužilo využití písní, jelikož hudba poskytuje příležitosti k diskusi nad tabu témata. Teoretická část definuje akronym PARSNIP a výraz tabu, výskyt tabu témat v médiích, a jejich přítomnost ve školním prostředí. Tato diplomová práce se dále také zabývá hudbou a jejím začleněním PARSNIP témat do výuky. Komentuje klima a prostory třídy, nezbytnou součást pro hovoření o tabu tématech. Poslední kapitola teoretické části pokrývá předmět plánování hodin, procesu, který je klíčovým v praktické části této práce, kde jsou vytvořené hodiny s využitím písní vyzkoušeny v praxi. V praktické části byl využit kvalitativní výzkum jak k vytvoření plánů hodin se zastoupením tabu témat, které byly reprezentovány jednotlivě v odlišných plánech, tak ke získání názorů a zkušeností učitelů s tabu tématy. Vytvořené plány hodin byly vyzkoušeny ve dvou hodinách, jejichž žáci tyto hodiny zhodnotili skrze dotazníky. Pro vytváření plánů výuky a k dosažení efektivity hodiny je nutné brát v potaz samotné prostředí školní třídy, ve které probíhá hodina. Tyto nutnosti byly zvažovány před samotnou hodinou. Názory a zkušenosti učitelů byly získány skrze strukturovaný rozhovor, ve kterém se autor doptával na témata PARSNIP, postoje, strategie výuky, a názory na začlenění tabu témat do výuky a následně jejich odraz ve dnešní společnosti

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with implementing PARSNIP topics into English lessons, which are not included in English coursebooks and are very important in understanding the intercultural relations of the world. For the implementation of the topics in lessons served using songs, as music creates opportunities for discussing such topics. The theoretical part defines PARSNIP and taboo, an overview of taboo topics in media and their presence at schools. Due to taboos being in media, it further works with the idea of music as the tool for implementing PARSNIP into lessons. It also mentions the classroom environment, a crucial aspect of addressing taboo issues. The last chapter in the theoretical part covers lesson planning, an essential process in the empirical part of the thesis, where lessons using songs are planned and carried out. In the empirical part, qualitative research tools were used to create lesson plans to implement taboo topics, where each lesson plan represented a different topic of PARSNIP, and to achieve teachers‘ and pupils‘ opinions and experiences by touching upon taboo topics. The created lesson plans were carried out in two lessons, whose pupils have assessed at the end of each lesson via a questionnaire. Lesson planning also includes various aspects of the classroom environment to advance the effect of the carried-out lesson; that is why these aspects were considered before acting the lessons out. Teachers‘ opinions and experiences were taken via structured interviews. The author asked the respondents about PARSNIP, their attitudes, strategies, and opinions about working with taboo topics, and their importance in today’s society.
