Containerization for High Availability in PostgreSQL

Abstract:

Information systems may be unavailable for a variety of reasons, including scheduled shutdowns and maintenance work to unexpected failures and outages. In order to minimize the unavailability of systems, the time required to restore systems after an outage, and to minimize the probability of data loss during outages, highly available solutions have been developed. These goals have been supported by increased demand for reliable and high-available systems not only in critical infrastructure but increasingly in other sectors as well. This thesis focuses on achieving high availability in the PostgreSQL relational database system and running it in Kubernetes with support for performing updates of the main version of PostgreSQL, with the goal of achieving near-zero unavailability during updates. This thesis surveys the existing tools for achieving high availability in PostgreSQL, for implementing updates and analyzes their advantages and disadvantages, and concludes with a description of the proposed solution and the results from testing. The solution consists of a manifest for a PostgreSQL cluster deployable in a Kubernetes cluster with Zalando Postgres operator and a design of a process for migrating a standalone database to a Kubernetes cluster.

Abstract:

Informačné systémy môžu byť nedostupné z rôznych dôvodov, od plánovaných odstávok a údržbových prací až po nečakané poruchy a výpadky. S cieľom minimalizovať nedostupnosť systémov, čas potrebný pre obnovu systémov po výpadku a pre minimalizáciu pravdepodobnosti straty údajov počas výpadkov začali vznikať vysoko dostupné riešenia. Tieto ciele boli podporené zvýšeným dopytom po spoľahlivých a výkonných systémoch nielen v kritickej infraštruktúre, ale čoraz častejšie aj v ďalších sektoroch. Táto práca je zameraná na dosiahnutie vysokej dostupnosti v relačnom databázovom systéme PostgreSQL a jeho behu v Kubernetes s podporou pre realizácie aktualizácií hlavnej verzie PostgreSQL s cieľom dosiahnuť čo najnižšiu nedostupnosť počas aktualizácie. Práca skúma existujúce nástroje pre dosiahnutie vysokej dostupnosti v PostgreSQL a pre realizáciu aktualizácie, analyzuje ich výhody a nevýhody a v závere popisuje návrh riešenia a výsledky z testovania. Riešenie pozostáva z manifestu pre PostgreSQL klaster nasaditeľný v Kubernetes klastri so Zalando Postgres operátorom a z návrhu procesu pre migráciu samostatnej databázy do Kubernetes klastra.
