Rehabilitation of a patient with lower limb amputation: case report

Abstract:

The amputation of a body part is a traumatic event that has a huge impact on patients' physical appearance, on their daily routine, their work and social life, implying therefore psychosomatic consequences (Yildirim, 2016). In this work I'm going to treat the lower limb amputee's rehabilitation. I've chosen this argument to highlight the importance of taking in account the psychological aspects of amputation in order to obtain a positive outcome of the rehabilitation. Furthermore, I want to address the importance of prosthetic restoration as a way for the amputee to get back to normal. At first, I'm going to treat lower limb anatomy. Then I'm going to outline the main causes of lower limb amputation and the possible surgical complications. After that I'm going to address the treatment of the psychological aspects of amputation and the prosthetic restoration phase. Finally, I'm going to discuss the clinical case of L., a lower limb amputee undergoing a physiotherapy treatment aimed at the restoration of motor function, the training in the use of the prosthesis, the autonomy improvement.

Abstract:

L'amputazione rappresenta un evento traumatico che provoca un cambiamento radicale nell'aspetto fisico del paziente, nelle sue abitudini quotidiane, nella sua vita lavorativa e di relazione con importanti risvolti psicosomatici (Yildirim, 2016). Ho scelto di trattare in questo lavoro la riabilitazione del paziente amputato di gamba per mettere in evidenza l'importanza degli aspetti psicologici al fine dell'esito positivo del percorso riabilitativo, e per l'interesse verso le possibilit? che offre al paziente la protesizzazione, vista come strumento per tornare alla quotidianit?. Si inizier? quindi trattando l'anatomia della gamba, per poi illustrare le diverse cause di amputazione e le complicanze legate all'intervento chirurgico. Successivamente si vedr? come affrontare i risvolti psicologici dell'amputazione e della protesizzazione. Per finire discuter? il caso clinico di L., paziente sottoposto ad amputazione di gamba, a cui applicher? un protocollo riabilitativo per il recupero delle funzioni motorie, per l'addestramento all'utilizzo della protesi e miglioramento dell'autonomia.
