The risk of the misdiagnosis of ADHD in connection with giftedness from the perspective of teachers

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá tématem chybné identifikace nadaných dětí. Konkrétně se zaměřuje na riziko záměny nadání a poruchy pozornosti s hyperaktivitou (ADHD) populací současných i budoucích učitelů a možnými prediktory tohoto rozhodnutí. Sběr dat probíhal formou experimentu kombinovaného s dotazníkovým šetřením. Za tímto účelem byl na základě pilotní studie vytvořen medailonek popisující chování fiktivního dítěte a upraveny dostupné dotazníkové metody zabývající se znalostmi a postoji v oblasti ADHD a nadání. Výzkumný soubor byl tvořen 159 učiteli a 59 studenty učitelství. Existence rizika chybné identifikace byla potvrzena vzhledem k tendenci učitelů i studentů vysvětlovat rušivé chování dítěte spíše na základě patologie (ADHD) než pozitivnějšího vysvětlení (nadání). V obou populacích byl zároveň zjištěn výrazný vliv nabídky možných odpovědí na výsledné rozhodnutí, vliv pohlaví dítěte však prokázán nebyl. Jako možné prediktory výsledného rozhodnutí byly zaznamenány v populaci učitelů pohlaví, postoje k nadaným dětem a zkušenost s dítětem s ADHD. V populaci studentů se pak podařilo prokázat vliv zkušenosti s ADHD z rodinného prostředí. Získané výsledky a jejich dílčí souvislosti byly diskutovány v kontextu předchozích výzkumů. Závěrem byly zmíněny případné limity výzkumu a návrhy pro jeho další rozšíření.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the topic of misdiagnosis of gifted children. More precisely, it is focused on the risk of the commutation of giftedness and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by population of current and future teachers, and on the possible predictors of this decision. The data were collected during an experiment combined with a questionnaire survey. For this purpose, a vignette describing the behavior of a fictive child was created on the basis of the pilot study and the available questionnaires dealing with knowledge and attitudes to ADHD and to giftedness were adapted. The research group was created by 159 teachers and 59 students of teaching. The existence of the risk of misdiagnosis was confirmed by the tendency of teachers and students to explain disruptive behavior rather on the basis of patology (ADHD) than on the basis of more positive explanation (giftedness). The significant effect of the offer of possible answers was detected in both populations, however the effect of the child’s gender wasn’t detected. Gender, attitudes to gifted children and experience with children suffering from ADHD were registred as possible predictors of the resultant decision in the population of teachers. The effect of experience with ADHD in family environment was demonstrated in the population of students. The results and their partial connections were discussed in the context of previous studies. Finally, the limitations of this study were mentioned and some proposals for its extension were made.
