Fungicides as a tool for the reduction of orchid mycorrhiza development

Abstract:

Skutečnost, že orchideje jsou na vztahu s mykorhizním symbiontem závislé přinejmenším v raných vývojových stádiích je objasněna po dlouhou dobu. Stále však zůstávají některé otázky jejich života neobjasněny. Skutečnosti zatím nevysvětlené se týkají zejména role mykorhizního vztahu u dospělých orchidejí, zvláště pak transfer uhlíkatých a dusíkatých látek mezi orchidejí a houbovým symbiontem. Důvodem našich nedostatečných znalostí je bezesporu absence účinných metod přípravy kontrolních rostlin s potlačenou mykorhizou. Jedna z možností, jak tyto rostliny připravit, je aplikace fungicidů. Ve své práci, která nese název „Fungicidy jako prostředek k získání orchidejí s potlačenou mykorhizou“, jsem sledovala vliv sedmi fungicidních přípravků (iprodione, thiabendazole, benomyl, carbendazim, propiconazole, fosetyl-Al a captan) na terestrické orchideje Serapias lingua a S. strictiflora pěstované v substrátu zeolit nebo v jeho kombinaci se substrátem na bázi rašeliny. Účinnost testovaných fungicidů potlačit rozvoj mimokořenového mycelia byla vysoce závislá na způsobu aplikace, stejně jako na zvoleném substrátu. Při aplikaci fungicidů do rhizoboxového systému, vykazovaly schopnost potlačit ERM všechny testované látky (mimo benomylu, který nebyl v rámci tohoto experimentu použit). Při aplikaci fungicidních látek přímo do mykorhizosféry rostlin byly však výsledky v některých případech odlišné. Při použití zeolitu ztratil schopnost eliminace ERM benomyl, při použití kombinace zeolitu a substrátu na bázi rašeliny, nebyly účinné látky thiabendazole, propiconazole a benomyl. Z výsledků tedy jasně vyplývá, že výběr substrátu a design experimentu je velmi důležitým faktorem ovlivňujícím účinnost fungicidních látek. Pro navazující experimenty lze tedy za nejvhodnější látky považovat carbendazim a iprodione. Fungicidy captan a fosetyl-Al doporučuji, i přes jejich prokazatelnou schopnost potlačit rozvoj ERM, z následných experimentů vyloučit, neboť jejich použití s sebou nese změnu kultivačních podmínek - změnu pH a elektrické vodivosti.

Abstract:

The nutritional role of orchid mycorrhiza in the early development of seedling and in the entire life cycle of chlorophyll-deficient species has already been established. But the roles of mycorrhiza in facilitating the acquisition and transfer of carbon and nitrogen to adult orchids are poorly understood. To explain this, I have to work with some control plants, it means plants with inhibited mycorrhizal association. In my thesis called „Fungicides as a tool for the reduction of orchid mycorrhiza development“ the effects of seven fungicides (iprodione, thiabendazole, propiconazole, fosetyl-Al, carbendazim, captan and benomyl) were assessed on two terrestrial orchids Serapias lingua a S. strictiflora, growing in either zeolite substrate or in its mixture with peat-based Klasmann Substrate No. 1. The fungicides were applied either directly into the mycorrhizosphere, or into lateral hyphoboxes attached to the rhizobox cultivation system. The efficiency of fungicides in the extraradical mycelia growth suppression was highly dependent on the cultivation system and substrate composition used. When the rhizobox system and zeolite as a substrate were used for cultivation of both the species, all the fungicides tested (except benomyl which was not tested) were highly effective in the suppression of the extraradical mycelium ingrowth into the hyphoboxes. However, when the same fungicides were applied directly into the mycorrhizosphere, some of them lost its efficiency. E.g., in zeolite it was thiabendazole, however in the mixture of zeolite and peat-based substrate there were thiabendazole, propiconazole and benomyl. These results indicate important role of substrate composition in determining fungicide efficiency. As a consequence, I can certainly say that fungicides carbendazim and iprodione appear to be the most suitable for the future experiments, as the use other two fungicides which were also highly effective, captan and fosetyl-Al, are associated with the changes of soil environment as their application solutions have unsuitable pH and conductance.
