Spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy of dynamically active clusters and constraints on intra-cluster medium physics

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá dynamicky aktivní kupy galaxií pomocí prostorově rozlišené rentgenové spektroskopie. Začínáme s Abell 2256 a vytváříme hypotézu směřující k rekonstrukci historie slučování kupy, abychom vysvětlili masivní rádiový relikt, a zároveň pozorujeme disociaci temné hmoty a stanovujeme omezení na mikrofyziku ICM prostřednictvím studené fronty v systému. Následně bylo provedeno statistické vylepšení metody použité při tvorbě termodynamických map v Abell 2256, které zlepšilo mapy o řád. Toho bylo následně využito ke zkoumání ještě složitější splývající kupy galaxií MACS J0717.5+3745 a oblasti infalujícího filamentu s využitím kontroly systematických nejistot. Úspěšně jsme oddělili promítaný signál základního filamentu WHIM od okolních atmosfér a vypočítali Machovo číslo pozorovaného rentgenového rázu při splynutí poblíž centra hvězdokupy. Nakonec se naše pozornost obrací ke zlepšení budoucnosti rentgenové astronomie dvěma články zahrnujícími simulace rozptylu částic pro magnetický divertor, který bude na palubě rentgenové observatoře Athena. Ověřujeme rámec simulace rozptylu částic pomocí laboratorních experimentů a poskytujeme měřítko očekávaného pozadí částic při použití divertoru.

Abstract:

This thesis explores dynamically active galaxy clusters through spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy. Starting with Abell 2256, we build a hypothesis towards reconstructing the merger history of the cluster to explain the massive radio relic, while also observing dark matter dissociation, and putting constraints on ICM microphysics through the cold front in the system. A statistical improvement to the method used in making the thermodynamical maps in Abell 2256 was then implemented to improve the maps by an order of magnitude. This was then used to explore the even more complex merging galaxy cluster MACS J0717.5+3745 and an infalling filament region by taking advantage of the control over systematic uncertainties. We successfully disentangle the projected signal of the underlying WHIM filament from surrounding atmospheres, and calculate a Mach number of an observed X-ray merger shock near the cluster center. Finally, our attention turns to improving the future of X-ray astronomy with two papers involving particle scattering simulations for the magnetic diverter which will be onboard the Athena X-ray Observatory. We validate a particle scattering simulation framework with laboratory experiments, and provide a measure of the expected particle background when using the diverter.
