Google Translate and eTranslate: Neural Machine Translation Comparative Analysis

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na strojový překlad. V úvodu je shrnuta historie tohoto vědního oboru. Od prvních vizionářů, kdy myšlenka samostatných překládacích strojů, které by svou prací napomáhaly porozumění mezi národy, byla pouze teorií a sny akademiků a filozofů, až po první průkopníky na začátku dvacátého století, kteří již přišli s prvními návrhy takovýchto strojů a experimentovali s nimi. Druhá část úvodu popisuje nejběžnější a historicky nejúspěšnější metody strojového překladu. Hlavní část práce tvoří srovnání překladu z angličtiny do češtiny dvěma různými systémy Neurálního Strojového Překladu. Jedním je Google Translate, tím druhým eTranslate. eTranslate je oficiálním nástrojem pro překlad dokumentů Evropské unie do 24 oficiálních evropských jazyků, do islandštiny a norštiny (Bokmål). Překládaný materiál je oficiální dokument EU. Ten byl vybrán pro porovnání, zda si eTranslate, který obsahuje překladovou paměť s odbornou terminologií EU, povede lépe než Google Translate, který je celosvětově nejpoužívanějším překladačem. Jelikož jsou oficiální dokumenty EU veřejně dostupné ve všech překládaných jazycích, má k nim přístup i Google Translate, který tak může získat oficiální terminologii z předešlých dokumentů. eTranslate tím přichází o výhodu terminologie a výsledný hrubý překlad obou systémů je, s nepatrnými rozdíly, na srovnatelné úrovni.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on Machine Translation. In the introduction the history of this field of study is briefly summarized. From the first visionaries, when the idea of automated machines that would translate by themselves and thus narrow the gap between cultures was only in the minds of scholars and philosophers, to the first pioneers in the beginning of the 20th Century who came up with the first designs and experiments. Second part of the Introduction explains the most common and successful types of Machine Translation. The main part of this thesis is a comparison of translation from English to Czech by two Neural Machine Translation systems, Google Translate and eTranslate. eTranslate is an official NMT tool of the European Union which translates to 24 official EU languages, Icelandic and Norwegian (Bokmål). The material these systems are translating is an official EU document. The official document was chosen in order to study whether eTranslate, which has an official Translation Memory with the terminology needed, would outperform Google Translate, which is the most widely used translation tool. Since the official documents are publicly available in all the languages, Google Translate can access these and learn the official terminology from the past translations. As a final conclusion, eTranslate does not have an advantage of having the official Translation Memory and both systems produce an acceptable raw translation of the document.
