Be going to – current usage based on the corpus analysis

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá polomodálem be going to a jeho současným územ. Teoretická část poskytuje přehled a srovnání hlavních prostředků odkazování do budoucnosti v Angličtině. Dále popisuje významy a užívání be going to tak, jak jsou prezentovány v předních gramatických příručkách a v současných korpusových studiích. Popsány jsou různé faktory a procesy podílející se na vývoji jazykového jevu, konkrétně be going to, jako jsou například dialekt, registr nebo gramatikalizace. Praktická část se věnuje analýze sta příkladů konstrukce be going to získaných z Corpus of Contemporary American English. Analýza je založena na hypotéze, že význam be going to prochází změnou a soustředí se, tudíž, na sémantiku výrazu. Dále se soustředí na následující aspekty: typ sloves, typ podmětu a typ textu se kterými se be going to vyskytuje. Zaměřuje se na všechny odchylky od tradičně chápaného užití tak, jak je popsán v gramatických příručkách. Výsledky analýzy jsou shrnuty v závěru.

Abstract:

The present thesis studies the semi-modal be going to and its current usage. The theoretical part of this work provides a summary and a comparison of the main ways of expressing future in English. It then describes the semantics and usage of be going to, as presented in key linguistic manuals and contemporary corpora studies. It describes different factors and processes participating in an evolution of a language phenomenon, be going to in particular, such as region, register or grammaticalization. The practical part analyses one hundred examples excerpted from the Corpus of Contemporary American English. The analysis is based on the hypothesis that the meaning of be going to has been undergoing a change and focuses, therefore, on the semantics of the construction. It further focuses on the following aspects: the type of verbs, the type of subjects and the type of texts be going to occurs with. It focuses on any kind of divergence from the traditional usage as described in the linguistic manuals. The results emerging from the corpus analysis are summarized in the conclusion.
