Problems of rendering socio-cultural context in film translation

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou převodu společensko-kulturního kontextu ve filmovém překladu. Vycházíme z předpokladu, že jazyk a kultura spolu neoddělitelně souvisí, proto se v každém textu odráží kultura daného jazykového společenství a překladatel tyto prvky musí odpovídajícím způsobem převést do cílového jazyka. Při převodu textu musí překladatel udělat strategická rozhodnutí a zvolit mezi použitím základních dvou strategií, domestikující nebo exotizující, a to v závislosti na typu textu a s přihlédnutím k předpokládanému cílovému příjemci. Konkrétní metody leží na škále mezi těmito dvěma extrémy, nejčastější z nich jsou výpůjčka (extrémní exotizace), generalizace a adaptace (extrémní domestikace). Popsali jsme specifika dvou forem filmového překladu, titulků a dabingu. Použití popsaných metod jsme analyzovali na příkladech kulturně zakotvených prvků ve vybraných filmech, Deník Bridget Jonesové, Shrek, Shrek 2 a v seriálu Přátelé, a dospěli jsme k závěru, že použití metod nevyhnutelně závisí na typu filmu a jeho hlavním záměru. Pokud film těží z výchozího kulturního prostředí a překladatel se rozhodne tyto aspekty filmu zachovat, bude nejčastější formou převodu výpůjčka. Pokud je film z určitých důvodů potřeba přiblížit cílovému divákovi a zahrnout prvky, které tento divák dobře zná, bude ve většině případů použita adaptace

Abstract:

The thesis is concerned with the problems of rendering socio-cultural context in film translation. We assume that language and culture are closely interrelated, thus every text must reflect the culture of the given language community. The translator has to render these elements adequately into the target language. When translating the text, the translator has to meet certain strategic decisions and choose between two basic strategies, domesticating and foreignizing, depending on text type and with regard to the supposed receptor of the target text. Specific methods lie on a scale between these two extremes, and the most common of them are borrowing (extreme foreignization), generic word and adaptation (extreme domestication). We described the particularities of two forms of film translation, namely subtitles and dubbing. We analyzed the usage of the described methods on examples of culture-bound elements in selected films, Bridget Jones's Diary, Shrek, Shrek 2 and TV series Friends and we came to the conclusion that the usage of the methods inevitably depends on the film type and on its aim. If the film trades on the source culture and the translator decides to retain these aspects, the most frequently used method is borrowing. If it is necessary, for certain reasons, to bring the film close to the target receptor and include such features that this receptor is familiar with, adaptation will be used in most cases
