Research of anthropomorphic robots perception in Czech environment, uncanny valley replication

Abstract:

Význam výzkumu vnímání sociálních robotů narůstá s mírou jejich uplatnění jako součásti životního prostředí běžného občana. Tento výzkum simuluje interakci existujících typů sociálních robotů s lidmi, bez předchozích zkušeností v této oblasti, a dále popisuje a vyhodnocuje jejich autentický projev. Výzkum analyzuje rozvoj vnímání sociálních robotů jako dynamický proces, identifikuje hlavní osobnostní charakteristiku pro hodnocení sociálních robotů "Potřeba poznání" a navrhuje model "Akceptace sociálních robotů". Výsledkem analýzy výpovědí participantů je návrh generických výrazů pro škály hodnocení sociálních robotů c českém jazyce a identifikace hlavních charakteristik "Podoba člověku" a "Vnímaný účel", ovlivňujících jejich hodnocení. Stylizace vzhledu, dětská podoba, vnímaná užitečnost a konzistentní vzhled jsou důležité faktory, ovlivňující vnímání robotů. Vysoká míra antropomorfismu v kombinaci s nedokonalým vzhledem nebo mimikou způsobují naopak pocity ambivalence, snižují akceptaci robotů a často vedou k jejich konečnému odmítnutí. Výzkum dále navrhuje několik nežádoucích proměnných, ovlivňujících platnost hypotézy Uncanny Valley.

Abstract:

The perception of social robots starts to be increasingly important with their growing penetration in the public living space. This research simulates interactions of existing typical social robots with people without experience in this field and evaluates their authentic responses. This research analyses the development of human-robot interaction (HRI) as a dynamic process, identifies the main influencing personal characteristic "Need for Cognition", and proposes a new "Social Robots Acceptance Model". As a result of the participant's response, there is a set of generic expressions for future use in HRI evaluation scales. This research also proposes two main robot characteristics "Human Likeness" and "Perceived Usefulness", as influencing factors. Low anthropomorphism, child-like outlook, high perceived usefulness, and consistent design are the main factors, positively influencing the perception of social robots. High anthropomorphism, combined with less realistic mimic and inconsistent outlook frequently causes ambivalent feelings, decreases affinity towards robots and can lead to their final rejection. This research also proposes several confounding variables influencing the Uncanny Valley hypothesis validity.
