Evoluce na příkrém gradientu nadmořské výšky: stanovení role genetických a ekologických faktorů v procesu vzniku druhů

Evolution at steep elevational gradients: assessing the role of genetic and ecological factors in speciation process

Abstract:

Etiopská vysočina představuje jedno z nejdůležitějších center endemismu na Zemi. Rozšíření endemických malých savců je ovlivněno přítomností Velké příkopové propadliny a výraznou zonací podél gradientu nadmořské výšky. Tato zonace je charakterizována savanovou nebo lesní vegetací v nižší nadmořské výšce, přes střední pásmo vřesovcových keřových porostů až po afroalpinské louky a mokřady na vrcholcích hor. Tento výrazný gradient se odráží ve fenotypových adaptacích. Použití 3D geometrické morfometrie ukázalo, že nadmořská výška je významným faktorem ovlivňujícím variabilitu tvaru lebky a dolní čelisti u tří rodů hlodavců (Lophuromys, Arvicanthis a Stenocephalemys). Sdílené fenotypické změny reprezentují případy paralelní evoluce. Tato disertační práce se dále zabývá genetickou diverzitu, evoluční historii a taxonomii několika skupin endemických hlodavců z rodů Stenocephalemys a Otomys, obývajících různé nadmořské výšky Etiopské vysočiny. Molekulárně-genetická analýza odhalila významně vyšší diverzitu malých savců, než se předpokládalo. Byly navrženi někteří kandidáti na nové druhy a některé z nich byly formálně popsány na základě fylogenetických a morfometrických analýz. Srovnání různých typů genetických markerů ukázalo, že mitochondriální DNA není vhodným nástrojem pro univerzální rozlišování druhů v etiopských horách kvůli několika případům mitochondriální introgrese. Tato zjištění však zároveň ilustrují užitečnost těchto savčích skupin jako vhodného modelu pro budoucí studie mito-nukleární koevoluce podél gradientu nadmořské výšky.

Abstract:

The Ethiopian Highlands constitute one of the most important centers of endemism on Earth. The distribution of endemic small mammals is influenced by the Great Rift Valley (into East and West) and elevation zones. The zonation is accompanied by vegetation changes from savanna or forests in lower elevation, through the mid-elevation belt of ericaceous shrublands to Afroalpine moorlands on the mountain tops. The evolution of the elevation gradient is expected to promote phenotypic adaptations. The use of 3D geometric morphometrics demonstrated the elevation-related differentiation is a prominent feature of skull and mandible shape variation in three genera (Lophuromys, Arvicanthis and Stenocephalemys). The shared phenotypic changes can identify instances of parallel evolution. This thesis further focusses on the genetic diversity, evolutionary history, and taxonomy of endemic rodent groups from genera Stenocephalemys and Otomys, inhabiting the Ethiopian highlands. Molecular-genetic analysis detected significantly higher diversity of small mammals than previously expected. Several candidates for new species were suggested and some of them also formally described based on phylogenetic and morphometric analyses. This thesis showed that the mtDNA is not applicable as a universal diagnostic tool for species discrimination in Ethiopia, because of multiple cases of mitochondrial introgression. This finding illustrates the utility of these genera as a suitable model for future studies of mito-nuclear coevolution along an elevational gradient.
