Translation in Media: Formal and Informal Forms of Address

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá, jak překladatelé z angličtiny do češtiny, v prostředí novin a časopisů, řeší rozdílné systémy oslovování v těchto dvou jazycích: zatímco angličtina má pouze jedno zájmeno pro přímé oslovování („you“), čeština disponuje dvěma formami (formální „vy“ a neformální „ty“). Překladatel musí provést analýzu anglické předlohy a poté rozhodnout, který ze dvou českých tvarů je nejvhodnější. Návod na analýzu předložený v této práci má tři fáze. Zaprvé, překladatel by měl co nejpřesněji určit identitu, pozici a jiné podobné relevantní informace u obou účastníků konverzace. Zadruhé by měl určit kontext a přesný charakter situace, ve které se konverzace odehrává. Zatřetí by měl provést jazykovou analýzu a najít jakékoli známky formálnosti nebo neformálnosti, které by pomohly co nejpřesněji určit vztah mezi účastníky konverzace (což může být provedeno na lexikální, syntaktické nebo stylistické úrovni). Kromě toho by překladatel měl vzít v potaz lokalizaci – vyrovnání kulturních rozdílů. Tato práce se snaží dokázat, s pomocí několika případových studií, že konečné rozhodnutí překladatele mezi tykáním a vykáním může sloužit k manipulaci se čtenářem – forma oslovení může vytvořit pozitivní nebo negativní obraz řečníka v mysli čtenářů a tím jim vsugerovat určitý názor na řečníka. Překlad oslovení se tak stává dalším způsobem, jak noviny a časopisy mohou manipulovat se svými čtenáři.

Abstract:

This thesis, focusing on the media, explores the ways in which translators from English into Czech deal with the different systems of forms of address in these languages: While the English language only has one form of second-person pronoun (“you”), the Czech language has two forms (the formal “vy” and the informal “ty”). The translator has to analyse the original English utterance and decide which of the two Czech forms is the most appropriate one. The analysing process outlined in this thesis consists of three stages. First, the identity of the speaker and the hearer should be espablished. Second, the context of the conversation or the nature of the situation framing the converstaion should by analysed. And third, the language of the original utterance should be examined, tracing any marks of formality or informality that would help to establish the relationships between the converstants (this can be carried out on the lexical, syntactic or stylistic levels). Apart from these three steps, localisation should also be considered. Analysing utterances in several case studies, this thesis attempts to prove that the final choice of the form of address can be used to manipulate the reader – the addressing pronoun chosen can create a positive or negative impression of the speaker in the readers’ mind and thus impose the desired opinion on them. Consequently, the translation of forms of address becomes another device newspapers and magazines use to manipulate its readers.
