Application of Radar Interferometry for geological Purposes

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá potenciálem satelitní radarové interferometrie (InSAR) pro sledování geologických procesů spojených s deformací zemského povrchu. V první části této práce je popsáno teoretické pozadí konvenční metody InSAR, ve které jsou kombinovány dva radarové snímky za účelem získání deformačních map terénu. Následně je uveden seznam satelitních misí vybavených radarem se syntetickou aperturou (SAR). Přestože konvenční InSAR může potenciálně dosáhnout výsledků s milimetrovou přesností, je to do značné míry ovlivněna různými dekorračními jevy. V posledních letech bylo vyvinuto několik multitemporaálních InSAR (MT-InSAR) metod, které mají za cíl předejít těmto omezením a některé z nich jsou zde stručně popsány. Jedna z těchto metod, známá jako technika Permanentních rozptylovačů, byla použita v praktické části této práce. Jako testovací místo byla vybrána oblast v okolí Mosulské přehrady nacházející se v severní části Iráku. Z geologického hlediska je základna teto přehrady špatná kvůli přítomnosti vysoce rozpustných materiálů, včetně sádrovce, anhydritu, slínovce a vápence. Použitím dat ze satelitu Sentinel-1A jsme dokázali identifikovat nejen přejavy subsidence spojené s pohybem samotné přehrady, ale také poklesy spojované se závrtmi vyvíjejícími se v blízkosti hlavního tělesa přehrady a oblast potenciálně postiženou sesuvnou činností. Pro výpočet horizontální a vertikální složky pozorované deformace byly zpracovány a sloučeny dvě nezávislé pozorování stejné oblasti. Výsledky naší analýzy ukazují, že v období mezi listopadem 2014 a zářím 2017 Mosulská přehrada poklesávala lineární rychlostí až 8,75 mm/rok. V odhalené oblasti sesuvu byly zjištěny jak vertikální, tak horizontální pohyby, dosahující maximálních vertikálních posunů do 9 mm/rok a maximálních horizontálních posunů ve směru sklonu svahů do 3,5 mm/rok. Vývoj závrtů v oblasti Mosulské přehrady je známou záležitostí. V této studii jsme zaznamenali několik závrtů, které poklesávají lineární rychlostí až do 19,9 mm/rok. Ve výsledku potvrzujeme, že karstifikace v této oblasti je stále aktivní a představuje hrozbu pro integritu Mosulské přehrady. Výsledky této studie ukazují, že techniky MT-InSAR mohou být úspěšně použity k monitorování různých procesů deformace země i v oblastech, které jsou obtížně přístupné.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with a potential of satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR) for monitoring of geological processes associated with deformation of the Earth’s surface. In the first part of this thesis, theoretical background of conventional InSAR, where two SAR images are combined to retrieve ground deformation maps, is described, followed by a list of satellite missions equipped with SAR instruments. Although the conventional InSAR can potentially reach millimeter-precision results, it is largely affected by various decorrelation phenomena. In recent years, several multi-temporal InSAR (MT-InSAR) techniques have been developed to prevent these constraints and some of them are concisely described here. One of these methods, known as the Permanent Scatterer technique, was used in the practical portion of this thesis. As a test site, the Mosul Dam located in the northern part of Iraq was chosen. From a geological point of view the dam foundation is poor due to a presence of highly soluble and karstified materials including gypsum, anhydrite, marl and limestone. Using data from Sentinel-1A satellite, we were able to identify not only the subsidence feature associated with the movement of the dam, but also subsidence features associated with sinkholes developing close to the dam’s main body, and an area potentially affected by landslide activity. To obtain actual horizontal and vertical components of the observed deformation, two independent observations of the same area were processed and combined. Results of the our analysis show that the Mosul Dam was subsiding at a linear rate of up to -8.75 mm/year between November 2014 and September 2017. In the inferred landslide area both vertical and horizontal movements were detected, reaching maximal vertical (downward) displacement rates of up to -9 mm/year and maximal horizontal (westward) rates of up to 3.5 mm/year, coinciding with the direction of slopes. Development of sinkholes in the Mosul Dam area is a known issue. In this study, we detected number of sinkholes, subsiding at linear rates of up to 19.9 mm/year. In result, we confirm that karstification in this area is still active and represents a threat to the integrity of the Mosul Dam. Results of this study show that MT-InSAR techniques can be successfully used to monitor various ground deformation processes even in areas that are diffucult to access.
