Securing Data in Motion in ZeroMQ and Data at Rest on Windows Platform

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa skladá z dvoch častí, zaoberajúcimi sa ochranou dát v rôznych prostrediach. Najprv, dáta v pohybe (dáta prenášané komunikačným kanálom), následne dáta v kľude (dáta uložené na disku). V prvej časti som definoval systém s nezabezpečeným komunikačným kanálom, využívajúcim výmenu správ pomocou knižnice ZeroMQ. Po definícii systému je predstavené porovnanie knižníc tretích strán určených pre ochranu dát. Toto porovnanie je rozšírené o ich testovanie výkonu. Výberom konečnej knižnice pre zabezpečenie bolo nutné túto knižnicu prepísať z jej natívneho programovacieho jazyka do jazyka definovaného systému. Počas procesu prepisovania som zistil, že samotné prepísanie nie je možné. Preto ako jediná možnosť vyvstalo použitie proprietárneho protokolu. Následne je tento protokol predstavený spolu s dizajnom, ohodnotením jeho bezpečnosti a vyhodnotením jeho výkonu. Druhá časť diplomovej práce sa zaoberá ochranou dát v kľude. V tejto časti porovnávam známe nástroje pre šifrovanie súborov alebo celého disku. Porovnanie nemá konkrétne rozhodnutie o použití najvhodnejšieho nástroja, kedže čitateľ by si mal sám z prezentovaných nástrojov zvoliť optimálny pre použitie v jeho systéme.

Abstract:

Thesis consists of two main parts concerning protection of data in different environments. First, it is data in motion (data travelling via communication channel), then it is data at rest (data residing on the disk). In first part I defined a system with an insecure communication line utilizing ZeroMQ messaging. After the system definition, comparison of third party libraries for the data protection is presented. This comparison is expanded by performance testing of chosen libraries. After selecting final library for the task I had to rewrite it from its native programming language to language of the defined system. During this process, I found out, that such migration is not possible. Hence, only option in the system was actually a proprietary security protocol. This proprietary protocol is then presented together with its design, security validation and performance evaluation. Second part of the thesis deals with data at rest protection. In it, I compared most widely known tools for file or disk encryption. This comparison does not have any final suggestion, as readers should be able to determine the optimal tool for their system by themselves.
