American Liberal and Conservationist Tradition in Scott Russell Sanders’ Hunting for Hope

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá komparativní analýzou díla současného amerického esejisty Scotta Russella Sanderse v kontextu tří vybraných liberálních autorů 20. století; jmenovitě Davida Herberta Crolyho zastupujícího progresivní politické smýšlení prvních dvou dekád 20. století, Arthura M. Schlesingera ml., který reprezentuje moderní poválečný politicko-ekonomický liberalismus, a Aldo Leopolda, který se ve 30.-50. letech 20. století zabýval především otázkami ochrany přírody, udržitelného rozvoje a etiky ekologie. Hlavním Sandersovým dílem, o které se tato práce opírá, je soubor esejí Hunting for Hope vydaný v roce 1998. Tato práce si klade za úkol podrobně analyzovat myšlenkové procesy jednotlivých autorů a na jejich základě vytvořit ucelenou posloupnost vývoje amerického liberálního smýšlení od počátku 20. století. Klíčovými koncepty, na které je v této práci kladen důraz, jsou odmítání fatalismu jako dějinného hybatele, důraz na účelovost lidského konání, snaha o prosazení sociálně spravedlivého vládního programu v USA, boj za omezení politického vlivu velkých korporací, ekologicky trvale udržitelné využívání přírodních zdrojů a změna spotřebitelského chování amerických občanů k zodpovědnějšímu a střídmějšímu charakteru. Výsledkem této práce je zasazení díla Scotta Russella Sanderse do kontextu vývoje liberálního smýšlení 20. století, jeho kritické srovnání s vybranými předchůdci a vyzdvižení nejdůležitějších ideologických prostředků, o jejichž prosazení se zmíněná čtveřice autorů pokoušela či pokouší. Zároveň má tato práce čtenáři přiblížit širší filosofický a etický rámec, do nějž jsou myšlenky a koncepty moderního liberalismu zasazeny, a představit mu alespoň část díla autora, který je v českém prostředí dosud téměř neznámý.

Abstract:

This Bachelor’s Diploma Thesis is dedicated to a comparative analysis of the works of Scott Russell Sanders, a contemporary American essay writer, in the context of three selected liberal authors of the 20th century; namely of David H. Croly who represents the progressive politics of the first two decades of the 20th century, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., who represents modern post-WWII political and economic liberalism, and Aldo Leopold, whose work from the 1930’s to the 1950’s was concerned predominantly with environment protection, sustainable development and land ethics. The principal Sanders’ work this thesis is dealing with is the 1998 collection of essays Hunting for Hope. The task of this thesis is to thoroughly analyze the thought processes of the individual authors and, using these as the starting point, to create a comprehensive lineage of the development of American liberal thinking since the beginning of the 20th century. The key concepts emphasized in this thesis are rejection of fatalism as the driving force behind historical events, focus on the purposefulness of human efforts, an attempt to establish a socially just government in the USA, struggle against the political power of large corporations, sustainable ecological exploitation of natural resources and changing the consumerist behavior of American citizens towards a more responsible, frugal character. The conclusion of this thesis should set Sanders’ works into the context of the development of 20th century liberal thinking, their critical comparison with select predecessors and focusing on the most important ideological instruments the four authors have been trying to promote. This thesis should also illustrate to the reader the broader philosophical and ethical framework of modern liberal ideas and concepts, and present at least a part of Sanders’ works to the Czech reader, to whom this author has been largely unknown.
