Symbolic play in preschool age and its dependence on the level of guidance of the play material

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá symbolickou hrou v předškolním věku, její kategorizací a závislostí na typu hračky. Dvaceti dětem (věk 49-64 měsíců) byly v přirozeném prostředí mateřské školy předloženy postupně tři sady hraček a bylo pozorováno jejich chování. První sada obsahovala nenávodné nízce strukturované hračky (přírodní a textilní materiály), druhá sada polonávodné středně strukturované hračky (kostky a figurky z LEGA) a třetí sada návodné vysoce strukturované hračky (dětská žehlička a autíčko). V kvalitativní části analýzy byla vytvořena kategorizace symbolické hry (dále SH) a podrobný popis pozorování čtyř ze zkoumaných dětí. V kvantitativní části jsme pak na celém vzorku sledovali výskyt SH, výskyt jednotlivých typů SH, flexibilitu SH a ochotu hrát si s hračkami po stanoveném časovém limitu. Nejnižší výskyt i flexibilita SH byly pozorovány u nenávodných hraček. Další rozdíly ve výskytu SH nebyly prokázány. U polonávodných hraček byla zjištěna nejvyšší flexibilita SH i nejvyšší ochota hrát si po limitu.

Abstract:

Our study deals with symbolic play in preschool age, its categorization and relation to the type of toy. Twenty children (49 to 64 months) were step by step given three sets of toys in their natural environment (kindergarten) and we observed their behavior. The first set of toys contained non-guiding low-structure toys (natural and textile materials), the second semi-guiding middle-structure toys (blocks and little LEGO figures) and the third guiding high-structure toys (children flat-iron and car). In the qualitative part of the study the various categories of symbolic play (SP) were defined. The study also offers a detailed description of observation in the cases of four chosen children. Then in the quantitative part we observed the whole sample in order to examine the incidence of SP, the incidence if its specific types, the flexibility of SP and willingness of the children to play with the toys after the time limit expires. Both incidence and flexibility of SP were the lowest for non-guiding toys. Further differences in the incidence of SP were not discovered. Both flexibility of SP and willingness of the children to play after the time limit expires were proved to be the highest for semi-guiding toys.
