Comparative analysis of audiovisual translation

Abstract:

The final year dissertation, entitled "Comparative analysis of audiovisual translation", is concerned with the problems involved in audio-visual translation, although the focus is on sub-titles and the target audience. The theoretical section commences with a representation of the general translation theory underpinning audio-visual translation. Subsequent to this, various forms of audio-visual translation are presented. The main part of this dissertation is devoted to sub-titling. The theoretical part concludes with a discussion about the German feature film, "Good Bye, Lenin!", which was used to exemplify this dissertation. Sub-titles are examined in the empirical section, although the emphasis is on the potential effects on viewers. This dissertation purports to be an introduction to audio-visual translation and thus guidance for anyone who wishes to become familiar with the problems surrounding it.

Abstract:

Die Diplomarbeit mit dem Thema "Vergleichsanalyse der audiovisuellen Übersetzung" befasst sich mit der Problematik der audiovisuellen Übersetzung, wobei der Fokus auf die Untertitelung und das Zielpublikum gerichtet wird. Der theoretische Teil beginnt mit der Darstellung der allgemeinen Translationstheorie, der Grundlage für das audiovisuelle Übersetzen. Darauffolgend werden diverse Formen der audiovisuellen Übersetzung vorgestellt. Den Hauptteil dieser Arbeit bildet die Untertitelung. Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem deutschen Spielfilm "Good Bye, Lenin!", der exemplarisch für diese Arbeit herangezogen wurde, schließt den theoretischen Teil ab. Im empirischen Teil werden die Untertitel analysiert, wobei das Augenmerk auf den möglichen Auswirkungen auf den Rezipienten liegt. Diese Arbeit versteht sich als Einführung in die audiovisuelle Übersetzung und somit als Wegweiser für alle, die sich mit der Problematik bekannt machen wollen.
