Textual and sociolexical transformations in the creation of a successful rapper: Soprano's artistic career case

Abstract:

Marseille rap scene has been from its origin one of the essential platforms of French contemporary music production. Within highly successful group IAM is currently represented by the numerous creations of one of the most famous French artists in this genre to date. Soprano's almost 25-year career has gone through several important stages, from a member of the hip-hop group Psy4 de la Rime, through a solo singer to a mainstream pop-rap artist. This bachelor thesis aims to present Soprano’s career and highlight its evolutionary tendencies by means of sociolinguistic and lexical analysis of a selection of three albums from the perspective of the Marseille characteristic sociocultural environment. This analysis was performed on a corpus comprising 37 songs, which were processed into a separate language corpus. The theoretical part focuses primarily on defining the sociocultural context of Soprano’s work, while emphasizing the definition of a language as a means of projecting the world through the prism of hip-hop subculture. Subsequent parts describe the characteristic aspects of this language and melody. The practical part presents an in-depth analysis of formal and thematic aspects of the songs from a chronological perspective as well as two linguistic aspects in Soprano’s work: the use of proper names and then the choice of anglicisms.

Abstract:

Marseillská rapová scéna představuje již od svého počátku jednu z nejdůležitějších platforem soudobé francouzské hudební produkce. Kromě veleúspěšné skupiny IAM je aktuálně je zastoupena především tvorbou rapera Soprana, jednoho z nejznámějších umělců ve Francii vůbec. Sopranova téměř 25letá kariéra procházela několika důležitými etapami, od člena hip-hopové skupiny Psy4 de la Rime, přes sólo zpěváka až k mainstreamovému interpretovi tzv. pop-rapu. Cílem této práce je představit Sopranovu kariéru z hlediska evolučních tendencí, a to pomocí analýzy tří subjektivně zvolených alb z hlediska lingvistického a sociokulturního, tedy v kontextu specifického marseillského prostředí. Materiálovým východiskem pro tuto analýzu se stalo 37 písní, které byly zpracovány do samostatného jazykového korpusu. Teoretická část práce je zaměřena především na definování sociokulturního kontextu tvorby rapera, přičemž je kladen klade důraz na definici jazyka jako prostředku zobrazování světa z pohledu hiphopové subkultury. Cílem praktické části je pak detailně analyzovat formální a tematickou stránku písní z chronologické perspektivy. Zaměřujeme se také na vývoj dvou konkrétních lingvistických aspektů v Sopranově tvorbě, konkrétně na používání vlastních jmen a na anglicismy.
