La Monte Young: radical minimalism and journey to Dream House

Abstract:

Tato práce je shrnutím života a díla jednoho z nejvýznamnějších představitelů hudební avantgardy druhé poloviny dvacátého století, La Monte Younga. Průkopník minimalismu a jeden ze zakladatelů hnutí Fluxus se po klasickém hudebním vzdělání uchýlil k experimentálním formám hudebního zážitku a jeho vyzrálejší tvorba se skládá téměř výhradně z tzv. drones, několik desítek minut držených souzvuků tónů. Jeho vize radikálního minimalismu pak došla nejdále v šedesátých letech, kdy se svou partnerkou Marian Zazeelou představili instalaci Dream House – multimediální prostředí dle jejich názoru naprosto ideální pro život a tvorbu.

Abstract:

This thesis is a summary about life and work one of the most important representatives of avant-garde music in the second half of the twentieth century, La Monte Young. A pioneer of minimalism and one of the founders of the Fluxus movement resorted from the classical musical education to experimental forms of experiences. His mature production consists almost entirely of the drones, a few tens of minutes held chords tones. Young vision of radical minimalism then culminate in the sixties, when with Marian Zazeela presented installation Dream House – a multimedia environment in their opinion perfect for life and work.
