The Art of Embodiment - The view on the body and its changes in contemporary visual culture and performance

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je vytvořit koncentrovaný přehled mapující hlavní způsoby nahlížení na tělo v umělecké produkci posledních čtyřiceti let, podložený vybranými teoretickými texty. Text se podrobněji zaměří na některé autory a umělce, kteří používají (nejčastěji vlastní) těla radikálním způsobem jako médium (tedy na oblast bodyartu a performance) a překračují zažité pomezí „nízkého“ a „vysokého“. Součástí práce bude také pokus o definici současných používaných strategií, konceptů a metaforických představ o těle, způsob jejich vyjádření a posun od subkultury k mainstreamu.

Abstract:

Body, with all his limits and possibilities, is an ethernal object of human interest. The question of embodiment belongs between the most fundamental issues of modern cultural studies or sciences like antropology or sociology. As a topic, it´s equally popular as an object of artistic reflection, especially in context of social changes inflicted by rapid techological development. Human physical conditions are used, like a medium same as the topos, particulary during the last quarter of 20th century. Its classical conotations are linked to the relation with the mind, mental states or social roles. This work shoud achieve a deep overview of bodily approaches and metaphores in artistic production of last fourty years. All these with the help of selected theoretical texts and essays. It will focus on autors and interprets which are using their own bodies by a radical way (it means bodyart and performance) oscillating between „low“ and „high“ production. Another pursuit will be shift of these strategies from subculture to mainstream.
