Internet Use and Evaluation of Online Content: Perspective of Women with Eating Disorders Experience

Anotácia:

Tato dizertace se zaměřuje na používání internetu z perspektivy žen se zkušeností s poruchami příjmu potravy. V teoretické části dizertace jsou představeny poruchy příjmu potravy a jejich specifika v kontextu používání internetu. Konkrétně jsou prezentovány teoretické motivy pro používání internetu, online aktivity a hodnocení online obsahu uživateli s poruchami příjmu potravy. Výzkumná část dizertace sestává z výpovědí třiceti žen se zkušeností s poruchami příjmu potravy, které se zaměřují na používání internetu v kontextu a vývoji nemoci. Tyto výpovědi byly kvalitativně analyzovány a vznikly tak tři empirické články: článek zaměřující se na motivy používání internetu ženami se zkušeností s poruchami příjmu potravy, reflektující výhody a nevýhody tohoto používání (Studie I); článek popisující online platformy používané respondentkami a jejich vnímání těchto platforem v průběhu nemoci (Studie II); a článek který prezentuje, jak ženy se zkušeností s poruchami příjmu potravy reflektují hodnocení online informací a jaké procesy a vodítka při tomto hodnocení používají (Study III). Hlavním přínosem dizertace je konfrontování a obohacení teoretického modelu Užití a uspokojení o specifika uživatelů se zkušeností s poruchami příjmu potravy. Konkrétně je akcentována síla internetu jako média a polemizována aktivní role uživatelů při používání internetu. Dále jsou diskutovány konkrétní gratifikace získané používáním internetu. Výsledky dizertace ukazují, že používání internetu ženami se zkušeností s poruchami příjmu potravy je dynamické a vyvíjí se na základě aktuálního stavu nemoci a propojených potřeb a motivace. Praktické implikace pro práci pomáhajících pracovníků jsou navrženy tak, aby podpořily tyto pracovníky v začlenění tématu používání internetu do jejich praxe s klienty se zkušeností s poruchami příjmu potravy.

Abstract:

This dissertation focuses on the use of the internet from the perspective of women with eating disorders experience. The theoretical section introduces eating disorders, the motives for use of the internet by users with eating disorders experience, their online activities, and their evaluation of the online content. The research section includes testimonies from 30 women that focus on their internet use within the context and development of their illness. These testimonies were qualitatively analyzed and they were used in the three original empirical articles presented in the dissertation: an article that focuses on the motivations for the use of the internet among women with eating disorders experience, which reflects upon the advantages and disadvantages (Study I); an article that describes the related online platforms and the respondents' perceptions within the course of their illness (Study II); and an article that presents how women with eating disorders experience evaluated online information, including the processes and cues they used in their assessments (Study III). The dissertation's main contribution is to challenge and enrich the Uses and Gratifications theoretical model by taking into account the power of the internet as a medium, the users' active role with regard to internet usage, and the specific gratifications. The results section shows that internet use by women with eating disorders experience is dynamic and evolves according to the state of the illness, the motivation, and the related needs. The practical implications for healthcare professionals suggest ways to incorporate the topic of internet use into their practice for clients with eating disorders experience.
