Adaptation and social support among students involved in short-term stays abroad

Abstract:

Studie se zabývá souvislostí kulturní a psychologické adaptace a dostupnosti sociální opory z více zdrojů: z domova, od místních a od osob jiné národnosti. Vychází především z teorií kulturního šoku, akulturace, stesku a zvládání. Výzkumnému vzorku 58 zahraničních studentů z Evropy i mimo Evropu jsme administrovali dotazníkovou metodu zjišťující adaptaci a sociální oporu. Očekávali jsme, že přijímání sociální opory z různých zdrojů souvisí s psychologickou a kulturní adaptací odlišným způsobem. Dále jsme zjišťovali roli několika demografických proměnných: mezi nimi kulturní vzdálenosti a délky pobytu. Korelační analýza naznačila pouze střední pozitivní vztah mezi psychologickou adaptací a sociální oporou od osob jiné národnosti (r=0,3). Studenti, kteří se pro sociální oporu obraceli i na ostatní zahraniční studenty, byli lépe psychologicky adaptovaní než studenti, kteří tento zdroj sociální opory nevyužívali (p<0,01). Přijímání sociální opory od místních ani z domova nesouviselo s psychologickou ani kulturní adaptací. Rovněž demografické charakteristiky s žádnou ze sledovaných proměnných nekorelovaly. Jsou diskutovány možnosti zjišťování sociální opory z různých zdrojů a specifika sociální opory z domova a ze zahraničí.

Abstract:

This study explores the relationship between cultural and psychological adaptation in foreign students and the resources of social support provided to them both from their home country and from the country they are studying in. Theorical background for the study includes cultural shock, acculturation, homesickness and coping. We conducted a survey on 58 foreign students from 22 countries including European and North American countries and China. The questionnaire asked about cultural and psychological adaptation and explored where the providers of social support came from. Furthemore, a few questions were asked in order to assess the role of demographic variables (e.g. cultural distance and lenght of stay). We hypothesized different roles of social support from different groups of providers on adaptation. The only significant relationship discovered by our correlational analysis was the one between psychological adaptation and social support from other foreign students of a different nationality (r=0,3, medium effect). Social support from home neither from local students didn´t correlate with adaptation. Equally the demografical variables were not connected to psychological nor cultural adaptation. Implications for better assessment of providers of social support are discussed, as well as specifics of social support from home and abroad.
