Book Censorship in American Schools and Public Libraries

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the censorship and banning books in American schools and public libraries. The aim of this work is to find and define the reasons for this censorship, as well as include its historical context and characterize its social and political impacts on American society. The dataset consists of several academic sources, such as books, journal articles and research articles, as well as number of news articles. The thesis shows that there is long history of censorship in schools and public libraries in the United States, however, the problem still prevails and nowadays is taking more dramatic forms. The conclusion says that the current wave of challenges and bans is connected to the more diverse literature concerning topics like race and racism and LGBTQ+, that is being included in schools and public libraries more than in the past.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá cenzurou a zakazováním knih v Amerických školách a veřejných knihovnách. Cíl této práce je najít a definovat důvody této cenzury, včetně jejího historického kontextu a charakterizovat její socio-politické dopady na Americkou společnost. Stěžejní podklady se skládají z několika akademických zdrojů, jako jsou knihy, časopisy a články, ale také několik novinových článků. Práce ukazuje, že cenzura má v amerických školách a veřejných knihovnách již dlouhou historii, nicméně tento problém zůstává a v dnešní době nabírá mnohem dramatičtějších podob. V závěru práce tvrdí, že aktuální vlna cenzury je spojena s vice rozmanitou literaturou zabývající se tématy jako rasa, rasismus a LGBTQ+, která je zařazována do škol a knihoven vice než v minulosti.
