Reconstructing user activity from network traffic

Abstract:

Analýza síťového provozu představuje výpočetně poměrně nenáročný způsob, jakým lze získat informace o některých uživatelských aktivitách. Cílem práce bylo zanalyzovat síťový provoz během provedení několika uživatelských akcí a následně definovat filtry pro jejich detekci. Druhým cílem bylo vytvoření prototypu nástroje, který dokáže na základě definovaných filtrů v záznamu síťového provozu detekovat uživatelské aktivity. Posledním cílem bylo demonstrovat funkčnost nástroje. První kapitola se zabývá sledovanými daty a obsahuje přehled několika relevantních síťových protokolů. Druhá kapitola pojednává o analýze síťového provozu a obsahuje definice filtrů pro detekci akcí. Třetí kapitola se zabývá popisem logiky prototypu nástroje pro automatickou detekci uživatelských akcí. Čtvrtá kapitola je věnována testování prototypu. Výsledkem práce jsou filtry pro detekci pěti uživatelských akcí a prototyp nástroje pro automatickou detekci akcí, jehož funkčnost byla demonstrována na testovacích datech.

Abstract:

Network traffic analysis represents a relatively computationally undemanding way how to get information about some user activities. This work aimed to analyze network traffic during several user actions and to define filters for the detection of these actions. The second goal was to create a prototype of a tool which can utilize filters to detect user activity from recorded network communication. The last goal was to demonstrate the functionality of the tool. The first chapter is about monitored data and contains an overview of several relevant network protocols. The second chapter describes the analysis of the network traffic and contains definitions of filters for the detection of user actions. The third chapter describes the logic of the prototype of the tool for automatic detection of user activity. The fourth chapter is about tests of the prototype. Contributions of this work are filters for the detection of five user activities and a prototype of a tool for automatic detection of user activities. The functionality of this prototype was demonstrated on test data.
