The Letters on Landscape Painting by Carl Gustav Carus and their scientific-aesthetical concept of knowledge

Abstract:

The present study of the Letters on Landscape Painting by Carl Gustav Carus analyzes this important written source of the Romantic period from a literary-aesthetical perspective and in the view of the history of thoughts. An introduction documents the process of its genesis and provides an overview about its reception and referring research. The first main chapter describes the literary character of the Letters and analyzes the stylistic elements used by the author, especially his implementation of a dialogic method. It gets clear that formulating his ideas in the form of fictive letters to a friend corresponds with the author’s way of thinking in terms of nature philosophy and his efforts to put across poeticising cognition. His aesthetical method enables him to build a bridge between the radical emotional romantic approach to art and nature, sometimes lending to ineffability, and the analytical-intellectual methods of the 18th century art theory, restricted to aesthetical doctrines and categories. The second main chapter works out and describes the different approaches of perceiving nature in the Letters: an experience of nature as an animate counterpart, a perception with a sentimental, artistic, scientific and religious eye. In bringing these perspectives into synthesis Carus endeavours to solve the dilemma of the modern human being and to conciliate the scientific-analytical way of thinking with a metaphysical holistic view. In doing so the author processes and combines ideas of his most important guiding spirits: Wilhelm Schelling with his idea of a world soul, Alexander von Humboldt in his objectivistic approach to nature and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and his organological comprehension of nature. This dynamical perception of nature forms the base for the aesthetical practice of landscape painting which is the subject of the third chapter. Engaged with concurrent models (Caspar David Friedrich, the Nazarene School etc.) Carus develops his ideal of landscape painting as an observation of the history of earth-life, a geognostical view which preserves the divine quality of nature. Therefore landscape painting is expected to be no less than a compensation of lost religiosity in a kind of devotional, meditative landscape. Summarizing the Letters on Landscape Painting form a philosophy of landscape. They do not deal primarily with practical creative problems, but problems of perception and cognition. The actuality of such a metaphysical interpretation of landscape and its elements is proofed by documents of modern and contemporary art, for example at Paul Klee (1879-1940), the conceptional art of Joseph Beuys (1923-1986) and the material art of Vik Muniz (born 1961).

Předložená studie Dopisů o krajinomalbě (Briefe über Landschaftsmalerei) Carla Gustava Caruse (1789-1869) usiluje o uznání tohoto důležitého literárního pramene romantismu z literárně estetického a duchovně historického úhlu pohledu. Úvodní přehled dokumentuje nejprve historii vzniku Dopisů, jejich působení a jejich průzkumu. První hlavní část se věnuje popisu literárního charakteru Dopisů, tzn. analyse tvůrčích prostředků a dialogické metody. Je zřejmé, že styl Carusových Dopisů je analogem jeho přírodně filosofického přesvědčení a jeho snahy o poetizující poznání. Jeho estetická metoda může propojit emocionalitu romantického umění a pozorování přírody, vedoucí částečně až k nevyslovitelnosti, s intelektualismem teorie umění 18. století, omezeného na estetické kategorie. V druhé hlavní části jsou představeny různé způsoby pozorování přírody: zkušenost s přírodou jako s živoucím protějškem stejně jako její prožívání z uvažujícího, uměleckého, vědeckého a náboženského hlediska. V synthese celistvého nazírání se Carus snaží řešit dilema moderního člověka a usmířit zvláště vědeckoanalytický pohled s metafysickým názorem na přírodu. Carus propracovává a propojuje přístupy svých nejzávažnějších inspirátorů: Wilhelma Schellinga s jeho idejí světové duše, Alexandra von Humbold s jeho objektivistickým pozorováním přírody, stejně jako Johanna Wolfganga von Goethe s jeho organologickým porozuměním přírodě. Toto dynamické pojetí přírody tvoří základ estetické praxe v krajinomalbě, jíž je věnována třetí hlavní část. Ve sporu se konkurujícími modely (C. D. Friedrich, Nazaréni a pod.) rozvíjí Carus svůj ideál krajinomalby jako „dějinného poznání země“, geognostický pohled na přírodu, v níž božství přírody zůstává zachováno. Krajinomalbě pak připadá úloha kompenzace ztráty religiosity ve formě zbožné krajiny. Dopisy o krajinomalbě se tak jeví v celku jako filosofie krajiny, v níž jsou tématisovány nikoli v první linii problémy utváření, ale problémy vnímání a poznání. O aktuálnosti takového metafysického nákladu na krajinu a její elementy svědčí moderní umění, např. u Paula Kleea (1879-1940), v konceptuálním umění Josepha Beuyse (1923-1986) nebo v „materiálovém“ umění Vika Munize (nar. 1961).
