Frequency distribution of character strengths and their relationship to personal well-being, quality of social relationships, and demographic variables for students grades eight at the secondary and grammar schools in Slovak Republic

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis was to determine for the first time by using a questionnaire named VIA youth survey the distribution of character strengths classification by VIA Peterson and Seligman for respondents in grades eight of secondary school and their equivalent - students at grammar school in Slovak Republic. 448 respondents represented all regions of Slovakia. There was detected the current mood using Fordyce happiness meassure, well-being questionnaire using Cummins personal well-being for children (PWI-SC) and a social relationships using questionnaire Social relationships score by Diener and Diener-Biswan, and demographic variables using separate questionnaire. Using Pearson correlations, t-tests and Anova were found relationships between different aspects surveyed by questionnaires and individual differences by demographic variables. The highest average scores were found in strengths Vitality, Humour, Curiosity, Appreciation of Beauty, Hope and Love, Forgiveness. The weakest – represented were strengths Prudence, Humility, Perseverance, Faith, Honesty, Leadership, Self-control. Strongest relationships with well-being were found in Hope, Vitality and Love. The most related with the quality of social relationships were strengths Love, Social intelligence, Perspective, Teamwork and Kindness. There were found some statistically significant differences in gender, religion, type of school, the existence of the partnership relation, size of the city and school success expressed by average grade on report card at strengths as well as personal well-being and quality of social relations. The results were compared with foreign research. Differences in foreign studies produce similar results within each country.

Abstract:

Cieľom diplomovej práce bolo pomocou dotazníka VIA youth survey poprvý krát zistiť rozloženie silných stránok charakteru klasifikácie VIA Petersona a Seligmana u vzorky respondentov ôsmych ročníkov ZŠ a ich ekvivalentu terciánov na gymnáziách v Slovenskej republike. U vzorky 448 respondentov, v zastúpení všetkých krajov Slovenska, bola zistená i aktuálna nálada Fordyceho škálou aktuálneho šťastia, osobná pohoda Cumminsovým dotazníkom osobnej pohody pre deti (PWI-SC) a kvalita sociálnych vzťahov dotazníkom kvality sociálnych vzťahov Dienera a Biswan-Dienera, a demografické premenné samostatným dotazníkom. Pomocou Pearsonových korelácií, t-testov a Anovy boli zistené vzťahy medzi jednotlivými aspektmi zisťovanými dotazníkmi a rozdiely podľa jednotlivých demografických premenných. Najvyššie priemerné skóre bolo zistené u silných stránok Vitalita, Humor, Zvedavosť, Vnímanie krásneho, Nádej a Láska, Odpustenie. Najslabšie zastúpené boli silné stránky Obozretnosť, Pokora, Vytrvalosť, Viera, Čestnosť, Vodcovstvo, Sebakontrola. Najsilnejšie vzťahy s osobnou pohodou boli zistené u Nádeje, Vitality a Lásky. S kvalitou sociálnych vzťahov najviac súvisia silné stránky Láska, Sociálna vnímavosť, Vhľad, Tímová práca a Láskavosť. U silných stránok, ale i osobnej pohody a kvality sociálnych vzťahov, boli zistené niektoré štatisticky významné rozdiely v pohlaví, viere, type školy, existencie partnerského vzťahu, veľkosti mesta a školskej úspešnosti vyjadrenej priemernou známkou na vysvedčení. Výsledky boli porovnané so zahraničnými výskumami. Zahraničné štúdie v rámci odlišnosti pre každú krajinu prinášajú podobné výsledky.
