Bakteriofág ako najpočetnejší objekt biosféry predstavuje model základného výskumu ako aj praktického využitia. Možnosťami molekulárnej biológie a génového inžinierstva sa spektrum jeho aplikácie rozšírilo do rady oborov. Fágový displej sa rozvinul ako selekčná technológia proteínového inžinierstva.
