Breeding of Squirrel monkeys in captivity

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na kotuly veverovité a jejich chov v zajetí. Literární rešerše je zaměřena na zoologickou systematiku, popis jednotlivých druhů a mezidruhové rozdíly. Popsány jsou zde druhy chování kotulů veverovitých, jako je například dominantní, sociální chování nebo také chování jedince během vývoje. Zmíněny jsou i jejich potřeby na správnou výživu v zajetí, ubikaci a na reprodukci. V praktické části jsou vyhodnoceny výsledky z etologického pozorování jedné ze skupin kotulů veverovitých, kdy jsou pozorovány tyto životní projevy: příjem krmiva, odpočinek, pohyb, nahřívání, pití, sexuální chování, péče o srst. Je pozorována přesná hierarchie skupiny, kdy je v ní jeden dominantní samec, který nejvíce času strávil příjmem krmiva, sexuálním chováním a péčí o srst. V hierarchickém žebříčku jsou dále samice 2,3,4 a chovná samice. Matka s mládětem jsou ve skupině v ústraní, kdy mládě strávilo nejvíce času pohybem a matka pod nahřívací lampou. Nejvíce času odpočinkem strávila samice 1, která se držela od skupiny a během pozorování uhynula. V práci je i vyčíslení nákladů na krmivo, kdy celkové náklady na rok 2023 pro 21 jedinců kotulů veverovitých činí 259 640,69 Kč. Data jsou sbírána ve spolkové organizaci ZOO a zámek Zlín – Lešná, přičemž pozorování probíhá celkem 14 dní (2 dny v prosinci, 9 dní v lednu a 3 dny v únoru).

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on Squirrel monkeys and their breeding in captivity. The literary research is focused on zoological systematics, description of individual species, and inter-species differences. I describe here the behaviors of dormice, such as dominant and social behavior, as well as the behavior of individuals during development. Their needs for proper nutrition in captivity, housing and for reproduction are also mentioned. In the practical part, the results of ethological observations of one group of Squirrel monkeys, where the following life manifestations are observed: food intake, rest, movement, warming, drinking, sexual behaviour, and fur care. A precise group hierarchy is observed, with one dominant male spending the most time on food intake, sexual behaviour, and fur care. In the hierarchical ranking, there are also females 2, 3, 4, and a breeding female. The mother with the offspring is on the sidelines, with the offspring spending most of its time moving and the mother under a heat lamp. Female 1, who spent the most time resting, stayed away from the group and died during the observation. The bachelor thesis also includes the quantification of feed costs, with the total costs for the year 2023 for 21 Squirrel monkeys to 259,640.69 CZK. Data are collected in the association ZOO a zámek Zlín – Lešná. The observation takes place for a total of 14 days (2 days in December, 9 days in January, and 3 days in February).
