Jason Bourne, A Revolutionary Artist in Hollywood: Between Classical, Art-Cinema and Historical-Materialist Narration in The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum

Abstract:

Ve své bakalářské práci analyzuji dva filmy z takzvané bourneovské série, Bournův mýtus a Bourneovo ultimátum, režírované Paulem Greengrassem. Oba filmy získaly po svém uvedení do kin pozitivní kritický ohlas a někteří publicisté je dokonce označili za průlomové. Přestože byly tyto filmy oslavované především pro svůj drsný realismus a Greengrassův dokumentaristický styl natáčení, tvrdím, že jejich výjimečnost lze nejlépe vysvětlit prostřednictvím konceptu historických modů narace, jak jej definoval David Bordwell. Dále tvrdím, že Bournův mýtus a Bourneovo ultimátum kombinují tři tyto mody: klasickou naraci, uměleckou naraci a historicko-materialistickou naraci. Tuto svoji tezi následně prověřuji v neoformalistické analýze obou filmů, kde sleduji vliv výše zmíněných historických modů na třech úrovních: ve vyprávění, stylu a významech. Tato analýza, která představuje jádro mé práce, odhaluje dva významné znaky: (a) nekomunikativnost (uměleckou konvenci), která v různých podobách zasahuje do všech tří popsaných úrovní, (b) postavu Jasona Bourna který, coby protagonista, ztělesňuje vlastnosti všech tří historických modů. V krátkém shrnutí, které analýzu uzavírá, usuzuji, že moje práce by mohla být rozšířena v podobně zaměřeném budoucím výzkumu. Bádání by se například mohlo zaměřit na širší spektrum současných hollywoodských filmů, které jsou buď výrazně umělecké z hlediska stylu (pozdní filmy Tonyho Scotta), nebo ideologicky odkazují k sovětským historicko-materialistickým filmům (Elysium, Snowpiercer). Takový výzkum by pak mohl pomoci objasnit, zda filmy z bourneovské série skutečně představují odchylku v soudobé hollywoodské produkci, nebo jsou součástí rozsáhlejšího trendu, přítomného v této klasické filmařské tradici.

Abstract:

In my bachelor thesis, I analyse two films of the Bourne series, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, directed by Paul Greengrass. Both of these films were critically acclaimed upon their release, and some journalists even called them a breakthrough. Although the films have been celebrated mostly for their gritty realism and Greengrass’s documentary-like style of shooting, I claim that their exceptionality can be best explained by the concept of historical modes of narration as defined by David Bordwell. I then propose that The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum incorporate three of these modes: classical narration, art-cinema narration and historical-materialist narration. I examine this proposition in the neoformalist analysis of both films where I trace the influence of the aforementioned historical modes on three levels: narration, style and meaning. This analysis, which constitutes the main part of my thesis, reveals two salient features: (a) uncommunicativeness (a convention of art-cinema narration) that in some form appears in all the three levels, (b) the character of Jason Bourne who, as a protagonist, embodies attributes of the three historical modes. In the short summary that closes the analysis, I conclude that my findings could be broadened in a similarly oriented future research. The researcher could, for example, focus on a wider range of contemporary Hollywood films that are either stylistically distinct (late films of Tony Scott), or ideologically reminiscent of the Soviet historical-materialist films (Elysium, Snowpiercer). This research could discover if the Bourne films truly represent an outlier in today’s Hollywood cinema, or if they are a part of a larger trend within this classical tradition.
