Defense Expenditures of NATO Member States and Their Influence on Public Finances

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je prokázat, jak se výdaje na obranu projevují na vývoji pěti makroekonomických ukazatelů v členských zemí NATO. Provedeme srovnávací analýzy výdajů na obranu a jejich vlivu na roční růst HDP, zaměstnanost vůči populaci starší 15 let, saldo běžného účtu platební bilance, výdaje na výzkum a vývoj a objem domácích úvěrů poskytovaných soukromými bankami. Data jsou porovnávána v období roku 2002 do roku 2020. Veškerá data jsou interpretována z online zdroje Světové banky. Tato bakalářská práce s názvem Výdaje na obranu členských států Severoatlantické aliance a jejich vliv na veřejné finance se skládá ze dvou teoretických a z jedné praktické kapitoly. První kapitola popisuje smluvní závazky plynoucí z členství v Severoatlantické alianci, jeho financování a problematiku plnění. Druhá kapitola obsahuje praktickou část, která popisuje výdaje na obranu a jejich vliv na ukazatele makroekonomické stability. Zabývá se popisem a vysvětlením pěti makroekonomických ukazatelů pro srovnávací analýzu. Makroekonomickou provázanost mezi proměnnými bude určovat metoda nejmenších čtverců. Třetí kapitola se zaměřuje na komparaci vybraných členských zemí podle toho, zda plní nebo neplní smluvní závazek NATO. Výsledkem práce je potvrzení, že výdaje na obranu mají významný vliv na veřejné finance členských států NATO. Kvůli zhoršující se mezinárodní politické situaci ve světě, členské země NATO budou muset pro ochranu Evropy navyšovat výdaje na obranu, které budou mít jak pozitivní, tak i negativní vliv na veřejné finance.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to demonstrate how defence spending affects the development of five macroeconomic indicators in NATO member countries. We will perform comparative analyses of defence expenditures and their impact on annual GDP growth, employment relative to the population older than 15 years, current account balance of the balance of payments, research and development expenditures, and the volume of domestic loans provided by private banks. The data is comapared between 2002 and 2020. All data is interpreted from the World Bank online resource. This Bachelor thesis, entitled Defense Expenditures of the North Atlantic Alliance Member States and Their Influences, consists of two theoretical and one practical chapter. The first chapter describes the contractual obligations arising from membership in North Atlantic Alliance, its financing and the issue of fulfillment. The second chapter contains a practical part that describes defense expenditures and their influence impact of macroeconomic stability indicators. It deals with the description and explanation of five macroeconomic indicators for comparative analysis. The macroeconomic interdependence between the vaiables will be determined by the method of least squares. The third chapter focuses on the comparison of secleted member countries according to whether or not they fulfill NATOs contractual obligations. The result of the work confirms that defense spending has a signaficant impact on the public finances of NATO member states. Due to the deteriorating internationl political situation in the world, NATO member countries will have to increase defense spending to protect Europe, which will have both a positive and negative effect on public finances.
