Catacombs of San Gennaro in Naples

Abstract:

Katakomby sv. Januaria jsou nejstarší a zároveň nejrozsáhlejší katakomby v Neapoli. Tato práce se zaměřuje na tzv. dolní vestibul – nejstarší jádro jejich dolní úrovně, protože funkce toho prostoru byla nejčastěji měněna. Původní prostor soukromé hrobky byl ve druhé fázi využit jako atrium propojující baziliku před katakombami s relikviemi světců uvnitř. Ve třetí fázi sloužil vestibul krátce jako baptisterium, když se z baziliky před katakombami stala na dva roky katedrála. Aby bylo možné tyto proměny postihnout, je na atrium v práci nahlíženo v delším časovém úseku od 2-8. století.

Abstract:

The catacombs of S. Gennaro are the oldest and vastest in Naples. This thesis focuses on the history of the so-called lower atrium – the most ancient part of the lower level – a space whose function changed more frequently than any other. What began as a private sepulchre morphed into the centrepiece of a complex containing, among other elements, a basilica and relic crypt. When the basilica sub divo became, for two years, cathedral of Naples, this atrium served as the baptistery. The project traces these and other transformations from the second to the eighth century.
