Aproximačné metódy "mean-field" sú úspešne používané na analýzu procesov šírenia v modeloch sietí, s veľkým využitím v epidemiológii. Boli pokusy o uplatnenie týchto metód v Systémovej biológii, okrem iného, pri Booleovských sieťach, s cieľom nájsť najvplyvnejšie komponenty modelovaného systému. Mean-field approximation methods are successfully used to analyze spreading processes in network models, with great utilization in epidemiology. There have been attempts to adopt these methods for Systems biology models, among others, for Boolean networks, to find the most influential system components.
