Analyse of Networking among classical Hollywood style, TV News style and style of intensified continuity in Film Good Night, and Good Luck

Abstract:

Pro svou bakalářskou práci jsem si vybrala film Dobrou noc a hodně štěstí, který natočil herec, scenárista a režisér George Clooney. Snímek mě zaujal spojením dokumentárního dramatu se specifickým stylistickým a narativním uspořádáním. Styl filmu se uvědoměle propojuje s narativní rovinou, která se pokouší rekonstruovat přípravu pěti epizod zpravodajského pořadu See It Now na americké televizní stanici CBS v padesátých letech minulého století. Film je současně výjimečný i nadstandardním přímým využitím archivních záznamů vystoupení senátora Josepha McCarthyho a vyšetřovací komise senátu USA. Rekonstrukčním nárokům odpovídá i volba černobílého obrazu, jakkoli má mnohem rozsáhlejší škálu šedi než dobové filmy, protože snímek byl natočený na standardní barevný materiál a zbaven barev až postprodukčně. Právě spojení současného barevného materiálu s volbou ho následně co nejvíce přizpůsobit dobovým konvencím, kdy televize byla výhradně černobílá, do určité míry naznačuje i dominantu filmu. Ta podle mě spočívá v propojování několika obvykle nespojovaných strategií, aby se posílil dojem věrohodného zobrazení historických událostí: 1) Propojování stylu televize, klasického stylu a postupů typických pro tzv. zesílenou kontinuitu současného hollywoodského filmu. 2) Propojování rétorických způsobů televizního zpravodajství, klasického vyprávění a prvků uměleckého vyprávění. 3) Propojování několika propagačních strategií: film jako dokudrama relevantně vypovídající o událostech minulosti (vhodné pro výuku na školách) a atraktivní fikční film. Navzdory politické tematice filmu se následující text nebude pokoušet o ideologickou analýzu filmu, ale volí tzv. neoformalistický přístup. Ten mu umožní přiblížit a popsat výše uvedená propojení. V první části práce se obecněji zaměřím na třetí bod, který vyplyne z kulturně-historického zařazení filmu. V další části budu už analyzovat vyprávění a styl filmu, přičemž se zaměřím na několik konkrétních příkladů, jak se v něm propojují právě různé typy narativních a stylistických postupů.

Abstract:

In the thesis I use the method of neoformalistic analyses (as it is present by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson) to analyze movie Good Night, and Good Luck. I choose the movie for its interesting formal style and system of storytelling. The story concentrates on investigative journalist Edward R. Murrow and his TV documentary show See It Know, precisely the historical fight with senator Joseph McCarthy. Authors of the script are George Clooney and Grant Heslov, Mr. Clooney also directed the film. Although it might offer an interesting point of view, I have decided not to analyze the film from the ideological point of view. In the first part of the thesis I present economical and cultural-historical context of the preparation, shooting and presentation of the movie, its reception and marketing strategies. I found it important to say something about the historical events presented in the film as well, so I do present short information on Joseph McCarthy, Edward R. Murrow, Fred Friendly and his co-workers, and TV network CBS. I have special interest in presentation of historical accuracy of this docudrama. I continue with analyzes of narration, especially of segmentation of sujet and a move from the classical storytelling. Here I argue that the movie is split to three divided story lines which do not support each other on the level of drama or story, but on the level of narration. They do not evolve together, but next to each other. This signifies a move from two lines of classical Hollywood storytelling (two parts of the story – work and private one). In Good Night, and Good Luck we have three lines: work on show See It Know (sometimes on Person to Person), story of Don Hollenbeck and secret marriage of Joseph and Shirley Wershba. In the last part of the text I am talking about style of the movie and I do argue that this movie oscillates among three type of style: classical Hollywood style, TV News style and style of intensified continuity as described by David Bordwell. The film defines its own rules of storytelling and moving from one style to another produces other implications. Unusual use of archival materials on one hand contributes to historical credibility and on the other it shows intrinsic properties of film and television mediums. In the context of cinema history, I would define Good Night, and Good Luck as a very clever and in its storytelling as a very sophisticated movie. In my point of view it is more interesting in its form than as a political commentary on USA, methods of George W. Bush or any ideological theme. And I do hope that I have accomplished to show that in my thesis.
