Diversity and life history of aphids on selected plant species in temperate ecosystems

Abstract:

Aphids are known for their great variability in morphology, life cycles, and life histories. This thesis focuses on this group not only because of the need of analyzing their role as pests, but also because they are an exceptionally variable and interesting group and there are still several persistent questions regarding their evolutionary ecology and relationships with the host plants that need to be answered. The first part focused on the need for a literature-based database of aphid distibution on different host plants. A comparison of the information value of Holman's publication Host Plant Catalogue of Aphids: Palaearctic Region with the general GBIF database revealed gaps in the coverage of Palaearctic aphid diversity and distribution in the general non-expert database and, at the same time, the enormous informative value of Holman's catalog, which, unfortunately, is not updated nor available in database form. With simple overviews, we outline the unused potential of data in the catalogue and its use for analyses of the host specialization of aphids. An upcoming platform for collecting data on host specialization and distribution of aphids is also presented here, which will enable international cooperation on an online database. The second part was devoted to the vertical stratification of aphids in the temperate floodplain forest. Using an aerial lift platform, we were able to reach the entire tree crown profile to evaluate the distribution of canopy arthropod communities for different tree species. No general pattern for all aphid species was observed, but the vertical gradient affected both aphid density and diversity. Our results showed that the position in the crown influenced the composition of the aphid species, while the relative height was more indicative of the density of the aphids. However, in both cases, the vertical distribution interacted with the tree species and varied with the season. The last part of the work focused on the comparison of different host plants and their cultivars in relation to the population development of Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker). In the first study, we evaluated the level of antibiosis in six spring wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) that differ in their tolerance to drought. Although significant differences were found between the cultivars, this could not be explained solely by resistance to drought. Our findings demonstrated that the morphological and structural characteristics of the wheat leaf had an impact on the aphid populations. The second study compared the degree of antibiosis between spring wheat and emmer cultivars, the latter commonly known as a potential gene source for breeding T. aestivum. The emmer cultivar 'Rudico' was the most susceptible to aphids. We therefore drew attention to the risk of transmission of genes responsible for the susceptibility of the host plant to aphids from emmer to T. aestivum.

Mšice jsou známé svou velkou variabilitou v morfologii, životních cyklech a znacích životních historií. Tato práce se na skupinu zaměřuje nejen z důvodu potřeby analyzovat jejich roli škůdců, ale také proto, že jde o mimořádně variabilní a zajímavou skupinu, kde zůstává stále řada nezodpovězených otázek ohledně jejich evoluční ekologie a vztahu s rostlinnými hostiteli. První část je zaměřena na potřebu databáze distribuce mšic na hostitelských rostlinách. Porovnání informační hodnoty Holmanovy publikace Host Plant Catalogue of Aphids: Palaearctic Region s obecnou databází GBIF odhalilo nedostatky nespecializované databáze v pokrytí diverzity a distribuce mšic v Palearktickém regionu, a také obrovskou hodnotu Holmanova katalogu, který bohužel není aktualizovaný, ani dostupný v databázové podobě. Jednoduchými souhrny ukazujeme jeho nevyužitý potenciál a možné využití pro analýzy hostitelské specializace mšic. Je zde také představena připravovaná platforma pro sběr dat k hostitelské specializaci a distribuci mšic, která umožní mezinárodní spolupráci na online databázi. Druhá část se zabývá vertikální stratifikací mšic v lužním lese mírného pásu. S použitím vysokozdvižné plošiny jsme byli schopni sbírat v celém profilu korun stromů a vyhodnotit distribuci společenstev členovců pro různé druhy stromů. Nebyl pozorován žádný obecný vzorec pro všechny druhy mšic, ale vertikální gradient ovlivnil jak hustotu, tak diverzitu mšic. Naše výsledky ukázaly, že poloha v koruně ovlivnila složení druhů mšic, zatímco relativní výška více vypovídala o hustotě mšic. V obou případech však vertikální distribuce interagovala s druhy stromů a měnila se v závislosti na ročním období. Poslední část práce byla zaměřena na srovnání různých hostitelských rostlin a jejich kultivarů ve vztahu k populačnímu vývoji druhu Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker). V první studii jsme hodnotili míru antibiózy u šesti kultivarů jarní pšenice (Triticum aestivum L.), které se lišily svou tolerancí k suchu. Přestože byly mezi kultivary zjištěny významné rozdíly, suchovzdornost zde nebyla jediným vysvětlujícím faktorem. Naše zjištění ukázala, že populace mšic byly ovlivněny morfologickými a strukturními charakteristikami listu pšenice. Druhá studie porovnávala stupeň antibiózy mezi kultivary pšenice jarní a dvouzrnky, která je obecně známá jako potenciální genový zdroj pro šlechtění T. aestivum. Nejnáchylnější k napadení mšicemi byl kultivar dvouzrnky 'Rudico', upozornili jsme proto na riziko přenosu genů odpovědných za náchylnost hostitelské rostliny k mšicím z dvouzrnky na T. aestivum.
