“We need a new song”: Voices of (Violent) Victims in Contemporary Rewritings of Homeric Myths

Abstract:

Cílem práce je analýza tří feministických přepisů Homérových eposů Iliady a Odysei. S pomocí teoretického rámce feministického kriticismu archetypů, jako i užitím vyobrazení žen v řecké mytologii, má práce za cíl prozkoumání nástrojů, jež ženské autorky využívají ve svých přepisech k subverzi původního narativu. Práce se také zaměřuje na komplexnost ženských postav ve vybraných románech, jejíchž ztvárnění slouží jako kontrast s původním často předpojatým vyobrazením žen v řecké mytologii. Tři vybrané romány jsou: The Penelpoiad (2005) od Margaret Atwood, Circe (2018) od Madeline Miller a The Silence of the Girls (2018) od Pat Barker.

Abstract:

The thesis aims to analyse three rewritings of Homer’s the Iliad and the Odyssey. Employing the theoretical framework of feminist criticism of myth, coupled with the portrayal of women in Greek mythology, the thesis aims to explore the tools employed in the feminist retellings by the women writers in order to challenge the original narrative. On top of that, the thesis focuses on the complexity of female characters featured in the selected novels, which serves the purpose of contrast to the previously often biased portrayal of women in Greek mythology. The three selected novels are The Penelopiad (2005) by Margaret At-wood, Circe (2018) by Madeline Miller, and The Silence of the Girls (2018) by Pat Barker.
