Translatological Analysis of the translation of historical texts using the example of Paul Kupelwieser's memoirs

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the translatological analysis of historical texts using the example of Paul Kupelwieser's memoirs Aus den Erinnerungen eines alten Österreichers. The theoretical part focuses on the steel and iron industry in 19th-century Europe, the literary genre "memoirs" and the specifics and problems of translating historical and technical texts. In the practical part the memoirs are analysed using the translation critical model according to Christiane Nord. The translation of the memoirs is then subjected to a translatological analysis with critical comments including alternative translation suggestions. The results are then collected and evaluated in the resumé of this thesis.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá translatologickou analýzou historických textů na příkladu překladu pamětí Paula Kupelwiesera. Teoretická část stručně popisuje těžký průmysl v 19. století zejména na území Evropy, dále se věnuje specifikům pamětí jako literárního žánru společně s úskalími, která tento typ historického a odborného textu může překladateli přinést. V praktické části je provedena translatologická analýza pamětí a jsou představeny návrhy alternativního překladu jednotlivých částí. Součástí praktické části práce je kritická analýza podle modelu Christiane Nord. Výsledky provedených analýz jsou v závěru práce shrnuty a vyhodnoceny.
