Relationship between life satisfaction of seniors and materialism in the context of fulfilling basic psychological needs

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá mediačním vztahem základních psychických potřeb jako jsou kompetence, autonomie a vztahovost mezi materialismem a životní spokojeností. Tento vztah byl již potvrzen dříve, nicméně ještě nedošlo ke zkoumání u seniorů. Sběr dat proběhl pomocí standardizovaných dotazníků Materialistic Values Scale (MVS), Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) a Basic Psycho-logical Needs Scale (BPNS). Dále tato práce detailněji zkoumá konkrétní předměty, které jsou pro seniory důležité a které by se v případě katastrofy snažili zachránit. Data byla sbírána v domovech pro seniory, seniorských klubech, vesnicích a online formou na sociálních sítích. Celkově bylo do výzkumu zahrnuto 189 respondentů, jejichž většinu tvořily ženy a lidé křesťanského vyznání. Materialismus negativně predikoval psychické potřeby i životní spokojenost, přesto nebyla hypotéza s mediačním vlivem psychických potřeb podpořena. Nicméně se ukázalo, že skutečně senioři nejčastěji považují vzpomínkové předměty jako jsou fotografie a památky za sobě drahé, ale v případě katastrofy většina přemýšlí velmi prakticky a zachránili by doklady a další věci nutné k přežití. Tato práce rozšiřuje znalosti významu drahých věcí pro seniory.

Abstract:

This thesis examines a mediation effect of basic psychological needs such as competencies, autonomy and relatedness between materialism and life satisfaction. This relationship has already been confirmed earlier, but it has not been studied on the seniors. Data collection was carried out using Materialistic Values Scale (MVS), Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) and Basic Psychological Needs Scale (BPNS) standardized questionnaires. Further, this work explores specific items that are important to the elderly and which, in the event of a disaster, are seniors trying to save. Data was collected in homes for seniors, senior clubs, villages and online on social networks. Altogether 189 respondents were included in this study, the majority of whom were women and people of Christian faith. Materialism negatively predicted both psychological needs and life satisfaction, yet the hypothesis with the mediating effect of psychological needs was not supported. However, it has turned out that the seniors most often consider memorable objects such as photographs and monuments to be precious, but in the event of a disaster, most would think very practically and would save the papers and other things necessary for survival. This work extends knowledge of the meaning of precious things for seniors.
