Fluorescence detection of atomic species in plasma or flame

Abstract:

In this bachelor thesis we focus on the determination of the absolute concentration of tellurium and bismuth in QTA (Quartz Tube Atomizer) and multiatomizer, using laser-induced fluorescence. Atomizers are used to converts analytes, which are in the form of hydrides, to free atoms. To determine the concentration, we first determined the spectral overlap of the laser and the absorption line, the saturation level of the fluorescent signal, the lifetime of the excited particles, and calibrated the signal intensity by measuring the intensity of the Rayleigh scattering. After examining the tellurium concentration in the QTA atomizer for flow rates from 20 to 100 sccm argon, we observed a more homogeneous spatial distribution of the tellurium concentration. Higher argon flow rates should be more advantageous for absorption spectroscopy with this analyte and atomizer combination. When examining bismuth in a QTA atomizer, we did not notice the same difference in spatial distribution at argon flows from 10 to 200 sccm, only on the total concentration of bismuth free atoms, due to the higher flow rate. Bismuth in the multiatomizer showed a rapid decrease in fluorescence with increasing oxygen flow from 0 to 20 sccm, especially at the inlet points. A survey of the bismuth concentration off-axis of the multiatomizer, for oxygen flows from 0 to 8 sccm, showed high homogeneity and a sudden decrease at the walls, indicating that the atomization was homogeneous and there were no large number of recombinations on the atomizer walls. That is why it is best to use no or little oxygen flow in the bismuth absorption spectroscopy in a multiatomizer.

Abstract:

V tejto bakalárskej práci sa venujeme určeniu absolútnej koncentrácie telúru a bizmutu v QTA (Quartz Tube Atomizer) a multiatomizátore, pomocou laserovo indukovanej fluorescencie. Atomizátory slúžia na premenu analytov, ktoré sú vo forme hydridov, na voľné atómy. Na určenie koncentrácie sme najprv stanovili spektrálne prekrytie laseru a absorpčnej čiary, úroveň saturácie fluorescenčného signálu, dobu života excitovaných častíc a kalibrovali sme intenzitu signálu meraním intenzity Rayleigho rozptylu. Po vyšetrení koncentrácie telúru v QTA atomizátore pre prietoky od 20 do 100 sccm argónu sme pozorovali homogénnejšie priestorové rozloženie koncentrácie telúru. Vyššie prietoky argónu by pri tejto kombinácii analytu a atomizátoru mali byť výhodnejšie pre absorpčnú spektroskopiu. Pri skúmaní bizmutu v QTA atomizátore sme nepostrehli rovnaký rozdiel v priestorovom rozložení pri prietokoch argónu od 10 do 200 sccm, iba na celkovej koncentrácii volných atómov bizmutu, v dôsledku vyššej prietokovej rýchlosti. Bizmut v multiatomizátore javil rýchly pokles fluorescencie pri zvyšovaní prietoku kyslíku od 0 do 20 sccm, najmä v miestach prívodu. Prieskum koncentrácie bizmutu mimo osi multiatomizátora, pre prietoky kyslíka od 0 do 8 sccm, ukázal vysokú homogénnosť a náhly pokles pri stenách, čo značí, že atomizácia bola homogénna a nedochádzalo ku veľkemu počtu rekombinácii na stenách atomizátora. Práve preto absorpčnú spektroskopiu bizmutu v multiatomizátore je najvhodnejšie použiť žiaden alebo malý prietok kyslíka.
