Media Reflection of Masaryk’s Death and Funeral in German Press Published in Czechoslovakia

Abstract:

Smrt Tomáše Garrigua Masaryka znamenala konec jednoho lidského života a bod zlomu v historii Československého státu. Jeho význam je nadčasový v politice, filozofi a sociologii. Jeho skon vyvolal nebývalou vlnu zármutku mezi obyvatelstvem Československa a zahraničí, ale i unikátní zájem médií. Předložená diplomová práce se zabývá vytvářením Masarykova mediálního obrazu v časovém rozmezí od 14. do 23. září 1937 v německy psaných denících vydávaných v Československu. Výzkumný vzorek tvoří čtyři německé deníky: Sozialdemokrat, Deutsche Landpost, Deutsche Presse a die Zeit. Hlavní cíl práce je definice, popis a analýza principů a postupů, se kterými mediální obraz TGM v období národního zármutku a následné poslední cesty pracuje. Dalším úkolem je nalézání diskursivních modelů, které jsou v této souvislosti s osobou T. G. Masaryka konstruovány. Metodický základ práce tvoří kvalitativní diskursivní analýza vycházející z ideologických předpokladů definovaných Johnem B. Thompsonem a ze sedmi diskurzivních oblastí podle Jamese Paula Gee. Jádro práce tvoří vlastní výzkum mediálního obrazu T. G. Masaryk v analytické části.

Abstract:

The death of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk was the end of one human´s life and the “turning point” in the history of Czechoslovakia as well. His significance is timeless as in politics so in philosophy and sociology. His decease caused extraordinary wave of grief among citizens of Czechoslovakia and people abroad, but also unique interest of media. Presented thesis deals with the process of construction of Masaryk´s media reflection during a period of time from 14th to 23th September 1937 in the german press published in Czechoslovakia. The research sample consists of four german journals – Sozialdemokrat, Deutsche Landpost, Deutsche Presse and die Zeit. The main interest of this thesis is to define, describe and analyse principles and techniques, which are present in the construction of Masaryk´s media representation during the national sorrow and the subsequent funeral. Another task is to find discursive models created in relation to T. G. Masaryk. The methodological background of the thesis is constituted by qualitative discursive analysis based on ideological assumptions defined by John B. Thompson and on seven discourse areas according to James P. Gee. The crux of the matter is the actual research of the media representation of T. G. Masaryk in analytical part of the thesis.
