Progressive hull of triangular meshes

Abstract:

Algoritmy pro deformace triangulovaných sítí často používají zjednodušených sítí pro snížení složitosti výpočtů, celkovou optimalizaci a zjednodušení daného problému. Tato práce zkoumá možnosti tvorby takových hrubých sítí. Dává čtenáři přehled možných existujících postupů a podrobně popisuje algoritmus "Progressive Hull", který dokáže zajistit vnější zjednodušené obálky při zachování detailů tvaru původní sítě. Poté je navrženo několik optimalizačních technik a vylepšení tohoto algoritmu. Implementační část této práce se zabývá různými specifiky algoritmu, optimalizací na úrovni implementace, kompatibilitou s použitými knihovnami a integrací algoritmu do deformačního filtru, který je součástí programového vybavení navrženého Petrem Kellnhoferem. Hodnocen je také dopad na stabilitu jeho deformační metody a na kvalitu jejích výsledků.

Abstract:

Mesh deformation algorithms often use coarse hulls for a reduction of the computation complexity, general optimisation and problem simplification.This thesis investigates possibilities of coarse mesh hull creation. It gives a survey of existing approaches and, in detail, it describes "Progressive Hull" algorithm which can provide outer coarse hulls while preserving shape details of the original mesh. A few optimisation techniques and quality enhancements of this algorithm are proposed. The implementation part of this thesis deals with various specifics of this algorithm, implementation-level optimisations, compatibility with the used libraries and with the integration of the produced implementation into the mesh deformation method by P. Kellnhofer. The impact on the stability of this deformation method and on the quality of its results is evaluated.
