Understanding Armed Conflicts: Evolving Nature of Conflicts in the South Caucasus

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá problematikou ozbrojených konfliktů na Jižním Kavkaze. Cílem tohoto výzkumu je zjistit role etnicity v boji o zdroje, moc a teritorium. Typologie ozbrojených konfliktů usiluje o dosažení analytické srozumitelnosti a přispívá k analýze konfliktů a k následujícímu tvrzení: etnická nepřátelství byla výsledkem a ne příčinou eskalačních procesů v Náhorním Karabachu, Jižní Osetii a Abcházii. Závěry tohoto výzkumu posilují teoretické uchopení problematiky a identifikují společné faktory nevyřešených konfliktů v dané oblasti.

Abstract:

This dissertation presents an analytical framework for understanding the armed conflict in one of the most dangerous regions of the world – the South Caucasus. The aim of this research is to assess the extent to which ethnicity is used to mobilize masses in the struggle over resources, land, and power. By proposing a typology of armed conflict, the study seeks to achieve analytical clarity and contribute to conflict analysis. The operationalized aspects in the case studies strongly support the following argument: ethnic animosity was the result rather than the cause of the escalation process in Nagorno-Karabakh, South Ossetia and Abkhazia. I argue that, the key issues at stake, which transforms low-scale violence to full-scale armed conflict, were largely political. The findings of this research sheds light on the conflict processes, provides a balanced and overarching approach, and draws some tentative conclusions about common factors of unresolved conflicts in the South Caucasus region.
