Academic Motivation and Conscientiousness Among High School Students

Abstract:

Cílem této korelační studie je prozkoumat vztahy mezi studijní motivací a svědomitostí a mezi druhy studijní motivace a aspekty svědomitosti. Hypotézy jsme testovali na vzorku 105 středoškolských studentů ve věku 15 až 19 let. K měření studijní motivace a jejich druhů bylo použito Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) a svědomitost spolu s jejími aspekty byla měřena za pomoci Chernyshenko Conscientiousness Scale (CCS). Předpokladem bylo, že studenti s vyšší vnitřní studijní motivací a jejími podruhy, budou svědomitější (H1, H1a-c). Dále jsme se domnívali, že vyšší míra vnější studijní motivace a jejích druhů bude u studentů souviset s nižší svědomitostí (H2, H2a-c). Předpokládali jsme také, že amotivace bude záporně korelovat se svědomitostí (H3). Naší domněnkou byla i existence kladného vztahu svědomitosti a autonomní regulace (H4) a negativního vztahu svědomitosti a řízené regulace (H5). Závěrem jsme zkoumali vztahy mezi jednotlivými druhy studijní motivace a aspekty svědomitosti (VO6) a neexistenci souvislosti svědomitosti s věkem (H7). Zamítnuty byly hypotézy H2 a H2a-c a na základě výsledků analýzy bylo nutné je přeformulovat ve smyslu pozitivní souvislosti vnější studijní motivace a jejích druhů ve vztahu ke svědomitosti. Tato studie mimo jiné otestovala AMS a CCS v českém prostředí a poskytuje tak o něco hlubší proniknutí do vztahů nejen obecných konceptů studijní motivace a svědomitosti, ale také do vztahů v rámci jejich struktur.

Abstract:

The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationships between academic motivation and conscientiousness and their types and aspects respectively. Hypotheses were tested on the sample consisting of 105 high school students at the age of 15 to 19. Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) was used to assess academic motivation and its types and Chernyshenko Conscientiousness Scale (CCS) was used to measure conscientiousness along with its aspects. Our assumption was that students with higher intrinsic motivation and its types would be more conscientious (H1, H1a-c). We also assumed that higher extrinsic motivation would correlate with lower conscientiousness (H2, H2a-c). We also presumed that Amotivation would negatively correlate with conscientiousness (H3). Our assumption was also the existence of positive relationship between conscientiousness and autonomous regulation (H4) and negative relationship between conscientiousness and controlled regulation (H5). Additionally, we examined the relationships between individual types of motivation and aspects of conscientiousness respectively (Q6) and non-existence of the relationship between conscientiousness and age (H7). Hypotheses H2 and H2a-c were rejected on the basis of the results of our analysis. The postulation had to be reformulated in the way that there is a positive relationship between extrinsic motivation and its types in regards to conscientiousness. This study tested AMS and CCS in the Czech environment. It also provided a more in-depth examination of the mutual relationships between the aspects of academic motivation and conscientiousness.
