Dental Anomalies of Children in Old Slavonic Period

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem předkládané rigorózní práce je na základě literární rešerše zpracovat zubní anomálie a nepravidelnosti ve vývoji a prořezávání chrupu. Jakékoliv odchylky v počtu, velikosti, tvaru zubů nebo vývojových poruch zubních tkání, vytváří individuální charakteristiku jedince, která se hlavně využívá k pozitivní identifikaci člověka ve forenzních vědách. Studiem dentálních anomálií vzrůstají znalosti o vývoji zubů, pomáhají v porozumění ontogenetických procesů a zároveň přinášejí odpovědi na otázky z etiologie a fylogeneze. U dětí historických populací se většinou sleduje (kromě výskytu zubního kazu a zubní hypoplázie) časový průběh prořezávání zubů a různé poruchy zubního vývoje. Praktická část práce je zaměřena na zmapování zubních odlišností ve vývoji a prořezávání zubů dětské populace ve středohradištní době,která je datovaná od počátku 9. století do první poloviny 10. století, a zjištění četnosti výskytu jednotlivých odchylek ve vývoji a prořezávání chrupu dětí.

Abstract:

The main goal of this rigorous thesis is to compile the dental anomalies and irregularity in formation and eruption of teeth on the basis of the literature sources. Any developmental variations in tooth number, tooth size, tooth shape or disturbances of dental tissues, create the characteristic of individuals, which is utilized to positive identification of a human in forensic sciences. Dental anomalies are investigated in families, sibling, homozygous and heterozygous twins to understand the genetic and environmental influence (multifactorial theory). Dental anomalies occure like non-syndromatic or with some syndrome, most frequently with dysostosis cleidocranialis, ectodermal dysplasia, Down’s syndrome, Grader’s syndrome or with cleft palate. The practical part of this thesis is concerned with finding out dental anomalies and eruption sequence of children and subadults in Old Slavonic period, which is dated within the interval from the start of the 9th century till the 1st half of the 10th century. Furthermore this part assigns the percentage of occurance and compares the results with the recent population. The occurrence of dental anomalies was carried out on x-rays of teeth of children and subadults of the Moravian burial grounds (Pohansko by Břeclav, Dolní Věstonice „Na Pískach“, Staré Město „Na Valách“, Rajhradice; Topolany 3 „Nad Žlebem“ and Prostějov „Okružní ulice). The status of the skeletal remains preservation affects the lower number of the children usable for the investigation of dental anomalies. The total number of children skeletal remains was 1455, but of all only 636 with preservation of mandibles and 346 children and subadults older than five years (including). The most frequent phenomenon was the agenesis of the third molar (18%), then the agenesis of the second premolar (3,12%) and then the agenesis of the second molar (0,9%). Very frequent were the anomalies of a dental tissue - specific enamel pearl (4,63%), hypercementosis (3,05%) and denticles (1,9%). One child may have the amelogenesis imperfecta. Two from three individuals of the burial ground of Topolany 3 „Nad Žlebem“ have the bilateral agenesis of the second and the third molars. Quite often is the finding of more dental anomalies at one separate individual, e.g. agenesis M3 and M2 or P2, agenesis M3 with denticles, hypercementosis or enamel pearl; agenesis P2 with hypercementosis or dentices. The eruption sequence for deciduous teeth was: 1, 2, 4, 3, 5 and for permanent teeth: 6, 1, 2, 7, 3, 4, 5, 8. These eruption sequences are in the concordance with the teeth eruption of skeletal remains of the burial ground of Mikulcice from the same historical period.
