Burglars: The influence of personality and place-attachment upon spatial behaviour

Abstract:

Cílem disertační práce bylo přiblížit trestnou činnost pachatelů vloupání s použitím kvalitativní metodologie. Teoretické východisko této práce se skládá z teorií týkajících se vazby na místo, chování v prostoru, mentálních map a osobnosti. Spojení těchto konceptů umožňuje ojedinělý náhled na rozhodování pachatelů z hlediska výběru cíle, místa a cesty k trestnému činu. Metodologickým východiskem této práce je obsahová analýza semi-strukturovaných rozhovorů, multidimenzionální analýza rozhovorů a dotazníků, strukturní analýza mentálních map a interpretace Cloningerova dotazníku temperamentu a charakteru. Výsledky analýz nabízejí nové informace o českých pachatelích vloupání a o vlivu vazby na místo na chování v prostoru. Závěry lze stručně shrnout takto: ochota věnovat se trestnému činu vloupání v oblasti pachatelova domova a identifikace vlastního teritoria jako domovské město/vesnice či naopak neidentifikovatelnost žádného takového teritoria hraje důležitou roli při výběru cílů vloupání. Tento výběr je dále ovlivněn pachatelovým sklonem k plánované či spontánní strategii vloupání a také jeho osobností. Tato studie poskytuje závěry týkající se porozumění pachatelům vloupání, jejich výběru cíle a strategií, které není možné získat z policejních dat.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to explore the issue of burglars using qualitative approach. The theoretical foundation of this research comprises of theories concerning place-attachment, spatial behaviour, mental mapping and personality. The combination of these concepts provides a unique insight into the decision-making of offenders in terms of searching for targets, deciding where to burglar and taking the journey to get there. The methodological foundation of this research is based upon content analysis of semi-structured interviews, multidimensional analysis of the interviews as well as questionnaires, structural analysis of the mental maps and the interpretation of Cloningers Temperament and Character Inventory-revised. The results of the analyses offer new information regarding spatial behaviour of Czech burglars in relation to place-attachment. The conclusions are that the willingness to burgle within the area around the home of burglars and identifying their own territory as a city or village or not having any territory such identified, plays an important role with regards to the choice of place of burglary targets. This choice is further influenced by the tendency of burglars toward planned or spontaneous strategy of offending and their personality type. Overall, this study goes beyond police statistics of burglars and aims to understand the choice of targets and implemented strategy from the point of view of burglars.
