Appointing Bishops to the Bishop's Throne in Olomouc during the Přemyslides' Reign

Abstract:

Magisterská práce se zabývá zvyklostmi investitury olomouckých biskupů v době po obnovení moravského biskupství a dále sleduje vývoj a proměny v biskupských volbách, ke kterým došlo v následujícím půldruhém století. Reformní zápal církve, nabývající postupně na intenzitě od 11. století, obrátil totiž pozornost mimo jiné i k otázce soudobé praxe obsazování biskupských stolců a v duchu svých emancipačních ideálů snažila se církev omezit vliv panovníků na volby biskupů, stejně jako z nich vyloučit obecněji účast světského lidu. Tyto ideály časem zasáhly i do českých zemí a ozvěny církevního reformního programu nalezneme také při studiu situace olomouckého biskupství v době přemyslovské. Předkládaný text bude sledovat postupnou proměnu ve způsobu dosazování biskupů v Olomouci, cestu od starého zvyku investitury, kde panovník hrál rozhodující roli, až po dobu kdy kapitula, plně vědoma si svých povinností a práv, volí si svého biskupa. Události v moravském biskupství zrcadlí jednak emancipační snahy podporované římskou kurií, jednak také aktuální prostředí českých zemí, ve kterém bylo pouze pomalu nacházeno pochopení pro reformní ideály. Příběh dosazování biskupů v Olomouci v době přemyslovské je tedy i příběhem o nesnadném pronikání myšlenek církevně emancipačního hnutí na české území.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the habitual practices of the investiture of bishops of Olomouc during the restoration of Moravian bishopric and it also depicts the development and changes of bishop elections which ocurred during the next 150 years. The religious reformative enthusiasm was gradually gaining strength since the 11th century and besides other things, it turned its attention to the question of contemporary practice of appointment to the bishop´s throne and, following the emancipation ideals the church attempted not only to restrict the impact of sovereigns on the bishop election but also to exclude the participation of mundane people. In the course of time these ideals affected the Czech lands too and the reverberation of the religious reformatory agenda are found when examining the situation of the bishopric in Olomouc during the Přemyslides´ reign. The presented piece of writing will follow the progressive transformation concerning the appointment of bishops in Olomouc, from the old habits of investiture when the sovereign played the most significant role, until the chapter fully aware of their responsibilities and rights started to elect their bishop. The events in the Bohemian bishopric mirror the emancipation attempts supported by the Roman curia as well as the background of the Czech lands which at that time showed very slow understanding of reformatory ideals. Therefore, the process of the appointment of bishops in Olomouc during the Přemyslides´ reign is also a story of a difficult thought-infiltration of the church emancipation movement across the Czech lands.
