Analysis of therapeutic (emotional) diaries: thematic analysis

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to better understand the experiences of patients that are undergoing medium term institutional treatment to recover from alcohol dependence. Even though there is a lot of research about alcoholism and its treatment, the usage of therapeutic diaries during institutional treatment is still not thoroughly explored. That is why this thesis analyses two diaries of patients that were being written during their institutional treatment. In the practical part of this thesis, both diaries were studied and evaluated using thematic analysis and 6 main themes were identified in each diary. There were some themes that were present in both diaries, but themes that were unique to every diary were also identified. These themes are described in detail in results part of this thesis, and they are also set into the context of the theoretical background in the discussion part. Lastly, the limitations and possible suggestions for another research are introduced.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto práce je hlbšie preniknúť do prežívania pacientov, ktorí práve prechádzajú strednodobou ústavnou liečbou alkoholizmu. Aj keď sa uskutočnilo mnoho výskumov s tematikou alkoholizmu a liečby, tak fenomén denníkov v ústavnej liečbe stále nebol dostatočne podrobne preskúmaný. V tejto práci boli analyzované dva denníky pacientiek, ktoré práve prechádzali ústavnou liečbou. V praktickej časti boli oba denníky spracované použitím tematickej analýzy a v každom denníku bolo identifikovaných 6 hlavných tém. Niektoré témy boli spoločné pre oba denníky a iné boli zase unikátne pre každý denník. Tieto témy sú v rámci výsledkov detailnejšie popísané a v diskusii je venovaná časť aj ich zasadeniu do kontextu teoretických východísk. Nakoniec sú spomenuté aj limity tejto práce a potenciálny návrh na následný výskum.
